I was looking for a universal learning remote from my humble theatre, when I saw postings for the Palm. Can I really use my Palm Vx for this? How well would it work? I've got to control my DVD, Amp, VCR and satellite, and the seats are 22 feet from the screen.

Thanks in advance.

With a 22 foot distance to cover I would think you are going to need an ir extender.
I have been using this product [Link: smarthome.com] and I am very pleased with the results.
So the answer is yes you can use your PALM Vx as a universal remote control.
How will it work? If you use the ir extender mentioned above it will work great, and you will have by far the best bargain out for a urc.

Good luck.

Dan K seems to be pushing this Palm issue all the time. Nothing will compete with the Pronto in the long run. If your equipment needs jusify a unversal remote get a Pronto. They can be purchased on line for about $ 249.00 or so. This Palm BS seems like a lot of trouble. Some people (like Dan K will always push Brand X items).
Stick with the Pronto you will be happy!

What experience do you have using a pda as a remote control.
Let me guess.NONE
If this is the case, what value is your opinion on the subject? NONE.
Have a niece day.

If you can not afford a Pronto, then what equipment could you possibly have that would justify getting the Pronto or simular remote?
Please stop directing newbies towards this idiotic idea of using a Palm for Home Theatre control.
End of this conversation!

I've been a Pronto owner for two years now.
I've been a Cinema7 owner for just under two years.
I just got a Handspring Visor for Christmas.

Omniremote makes a springboard module for the Visor line that includes their universal remote control software AND an enhanced IR emitter.

Omniremote is not quite as flexible as the Pronto for programming. You can find specifics in other threads here about what is different.

What omniremote CAN DO, however, is let you use your palm or related PDA as a universal remote if that is what you want to do.

You'll probably wish it had a better backlight. You'll probably wish it had better range. You'll be able to play games and schedule meetings during commercials. Of those three things, the Pronto eliminates the first two, but can't really compete with the third.

If you're really trying to save money over a Pronto, but want a good universal remote, I suggest spending $20 to $40 on a OneForAll Cinema7 or a Radio Shack 1994. They won't play games either, but both can do
an amazing job of controlling a home theater. I prefer my Cinema7 over my Pronto. My Pronto impresses quests though. My Visor is always with me, so I may get Omniremote anyway, just so I can change my own channels wherever I go. I love to see the folks at Best Buy go crazy when I bring my remote to the electronics department.

Michael... Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Flame someone, expect to get flamed back. Be nice, offer positive suggestions, and that's how the world will treat you.

I know how you must feel.I hate when people have a point of view other then my own.How stupid of them.
Why do they do that?
The fact of the matter is a Palm with the ir repeater mentioned ealier in this thread does make a excellent remote control.
What do you think, that I'm making this all up to mislead people?
I'm not an actor ,but please tell what you think my motivation is in this role.
Now this conversation is over as far as I'm concerned.

I think that if you are starting from scratch, choosing that perfect remote is a big deal... you want to know the best of the $200 - $400 you are about to spend. I was looking forward to getting a $200 Marantz remote... the $350 Pronto was too much (how do I explain that one to the wife?)... then I get a Handspring Visor Prism for Christmas. That opens a new door... I am going to use it as my home theater URC. Highly customizeable(sp), and new software being written (especially color now!). I think that is you have an existing Palm, using it as a URC is an option to save another $x00. I personally love the idea of my Visor as a URC, and was definetly turned on by that option before I got it. I am pretty much the only one that uses everything in the theater, so if it stays with me, noone suffers. I don't understand the negativity towards Dan K, but it is an excellent choice. There will always be ongoing arguments... this car better than that car / Chicago Cubs better than Chicago White Sox (which they are, fans are more loyal...) / etc... everyone has opinions, and that is exactly what this forum is for, right?

Happy New Year... I will be switching from ABC to NBC, etc on my new Visor Prism (which eliminates the need for a backlight... the whole damn screen is bright!)

: )

Dennis,

I'd like to know what sort of battery life you get between charges of the L-ion battery in that Prism. When you get a chance to figure it out, will you post it here please?

Thanks,

Dave
