i recently became employed by Ultimate electronics, and i was looking at PDA's for general PDA stuff. then i remembered some old palm software for using it as a remote.
my question is what is the best software/hardware that would be able to handle 20+ profiles for the various AV rooms that we have at work. plus keep a "home" profile for all the stuff in my house. Also the ability to use car audio remote codes would be a good thing too
i was looking at a few sony clie models. or possibly an axim
any help would be apreciated

Hi Brian,

I work at a Soundtrack/Ultimate Electronics in Denver. I had the same issue... I went with a Sony Clie 615 that had been returned by a customer. The price was right, it has good ir range w/o requiring an extender, I can get it covered by our extended warranty very reasonably, and since we don't carry PocketPC devices I didn't consider those (I wanted to be able to sell one to a customer if they found it interesting).

For software... the Clie comes with Sony's IR software which works well but can't be customized at all... no learning, no upgrades, no macros, no customized layouts.

I tried omniremote first. Supports customized layouts, macros, learning, imports pronto ccfs... however I couldn't get the learning or the imported commands to work. I gave up on it. Great feature set I just couldn't get the most important part of the app to work.

I then tried NoviiRemote. It doesn't (yet) support macros, customized layouts or imported commands. It does learn commands from other remotes very well. It allows you to setup different "Rooms" that work well for our various AVPacks and audio/video rooms. I thought the preset layouts would be limiting but they actually work quite well. If they add the ability to import pronto ccf files and add macros I'll be a happy camper.

Al

fyi... if you are interested I can send you the codes I have learned. I don't have everything done yet but it might save you some time.

At this point the best software is from PDAwin, and only works on windows based PDAs. But you will need to get an IR booster for the Axim

thanks for the info. all things have been pointing to the tg50 clie. but i might splurge and go for the nx73 since it would work better as a universal remote with the flip arround screen.
so basicly omniremote would be the best if you could get it to learn commands. is there a possible way to fake it into learning by DLing codes or things like that rather than using the remote to teach it.
kinda new to the remote thing, but i am pretty quick on the uptake of this stuff

BTW i am workin at one of the new stores in austin, very fun place to work

One note... I don't think noviiremote works w Palm OS5. I'd send the noviiremote folks as email to see what the status of that is.

fyi... I couldn't get omniremote's import function or it's learn function to work in a consistent fashion. But hey, it's free to try so give it a shot... it may work for you.

Hello,

How do you import Pronto CCF file into the OmniRemote for Palm?

Go to [Link: pacificneotek.com] to see information about OmniRemote databases.

On that page, they state that you can import the HEX values from a CCF file. They say it is covered in their manual.
