Does anyone out there know of plans to get remote features into a PalmOS-based PDA outside of the Sony Clie?

I've just seen the new Palm "Tungsten" screens and they are nothing short of spectacular. The cheaper Tungsten E model with a 320x320 screen retails for around $200, the more expensive T3 model is $400 with a 320x480 screen, double the resolution of the 320x240 IPAQs.

These screens are ideal for remote control purposes. The folks at Palm have a potential winner here. I wonder if they know it.

you could look at omniremote, don't know what versions of the palm OS it works with. Also you would need to add an IR emitter, the ones in PDAs are not strong enough to be used as remotes.

Perusing this forum, I find no recent mentions of Omniremote or Philips Prontolite software for the Palm, leading me to believe that these solutions are unpopular. Anybody know differently?

I had the same question regarding Palm based remotes. On the Palm website, there is software to turn a PDA into a remote control. I haven't ordered it yet, but the cost for the B&W version is $14.95 and the color is a few dollars more. They claim that the IR beam is good for most normal distances.

I'm looking into this new control system by Aurora Multimedie called "WACI". It stands for Web Access Control Interface. The neat thing is that it is a LAN based control system that my Sony Clie TG50 (bluetooth enabled) can control through an access point on my LAN. In essence, I will have a complete wireless control system with a 30-40 foot range from my access point.

I am also in the process of looking for software that will turn my Tungsten W into a decent remote. The Palm software website contains a trial version of something called "NoviiRemote" from www.novii.tv. It works on Palm OS 3/4/5 , but am yet to try it out...will let u know what it's like and what the codebase support is like for my existing AV Kit..

I just downloaded and installed NoviiRemote. I have to say it was extremely easy to learn from my existing remotes, and the included database had several of my devices, as well. However, it's still missing quite a bit. You can't customize the names of the buttons (change EXIT to Clear for example) to match your own remotes' names. And you can't set up a "home" page with macros for your system. That's a big big thing for us. Hopefully, those are no-brainer features that will be coming soon. The 320x320 resolution on my Palm Zire 71 looks fantastic, and the range works great. Unfortunately, you have to keep flipping between screens to input your button sequences (I have to enter channel numbers plus Enter to change channels, and with Novii that's "3->8-> down screen-> right arrow-> up screen-> 1" enter to get to channel 38-1 -- six buttons!). It's getting ridiculous.

I tried Omniremote and OR Desktop, and while they looked really neat, I couldn't ever get them to learn from my existing remotes. Otherwise, I'd be happy with that.

Maybe a newer version will be out soon?!

Holly.

I use OmniRemote because NoviiRemote, which is beautiful, doesn't work with my components. I trained my PDA in about 2 minutes for my tv. It is a 19" 2002 RCA with only 23 buttons.
