I have used and programmed a Pronto pro on and off for a friend for couple of years. They have now moved away awhile back, and I have not kept up with what is current regarding Pronto/iPAQ PDA's etc.

I was going to buy myself a Pronto pro, and also wanted a PDA. Then i see that it is possible to get software for the iPAQ to act as universal remote.

I was looking at an new iPAQ model that had bluetooth, etc etc, can not remember the model number, but the salesamn said it was the top iPAQ model. Would that have been the 5500? or is there one above that. From reading on the forum I have read about NEVO IR, and it would seem that the 5500 does not have this option.

Is this so? or does iPAQ do PDA with Bluetooth and the nevo IR, or is it going to be a case of buying a lesser spec iPAQ in order to have the higher power range of the NEVO IR. I know I could buy a IR extender, IR CF card, but it is another 'thing' mas opposed to an all in one unit.

Cheers

neil

I've been asking this too. On the AVS site, they said go with the iPaq 2215.

Checkout the reviews on www.pdabuyersguide.com.

You want either the IPAQ 3950/3955 or IPAQ 5450/5455. They are similar, but the 5450 has WiFi, a fingerprint scanner and hot-swappable battery. Otherwise they are the same.

MOdels inding in '0' are sold through business channels. Models ending in '5' are sold through consumer cahnnels. Otherwise they are the same. You can get a 3970 on the Internet for around $200 and a 5450 for around $400. If you are going to use it just as a remote for your entertainment system, the less expensive model will work just fine.

OK, thanks,
I understand the 5550 does not have the NEVO software, but is the hardware of the 5550 the same as the 5450, IE does the 5550/5555 have the uprated IR TX diode?
Perhaps it is built in but not enabled? therefore firmware upgrades?

I will be using the machine for other work, not just the remote functionability. Mainly flight planning/ weight and balance/ navigation software

I have an iPAQ h2215. It has bluetooth and NEVO.

Don't know a whole lot about it since I've just started playing with NEVO today. But I've already got it controlling my TV, PVR, DVD, and VCR without learning a code or programming anything in the layout. For some reason, I can't find a device code for my Yamaha amp. But having to learn the codes for one device is not all that bad.

Compared to the Pronto-esque remotes, the IR range sucks. And button response (the time from when I hit the button on the iPAQ until my equipment responds) seems a little slow.

But hey, I was getting the iPAQ for a PDA, not a remote. So having NEVO is gravy and I can't knock it all that much. If I were buying it for mainly a remote control, I would have a lot more critical things to say, I expect.
