If price is no object, which PPC would you go with for controlling a home theater? I also want to use it to connect to my wi-fi internet and I would like to have native IR without having to get an extender.

The plan is to use MainLobby and DVDLobby to control all equipment including a 400 disk DVD changer.

Thoughts?

Hi there,

from my own experience & the advice of others on this forum I purchased an iPaq 5450, after previously owning an iPaq 3970 with an extender for Wi-Fi.

The newer model the 5550 does not come with the built in Nevo software & more importantly the consumer IR.

It also has the Wi-Fi also built in & from my intial impression the overall unit running PPC 2003 & PDAWin it is a fantastic unit. It would aslo be available at a good price as the newer model is now out.

Have you actually used the 5450 with PDAWin? Many people, including myself, are having problems with getting PDAWin to work on this model. In fact, I have not come across anyone in these forums who has managed to get the two to work together (I hope someone out there will correct me).

I'd like to suggest/invite users of CIR iPaqs who wanted TVRC for that feature to try Total Remote:

[Link: griffintechnology.com]

Since v2.0 we can handle the CIR LED... in theory. You all are scaring me with these horror stories, so now I'm nervous that you all will find problems with Total Remote as well.

Perhaps one significant difference is I very much WANT to know about any bugs that TR might have, so I can FIX them. :)

Dell Axim X3i.
It has very strong IR and does not need an extender, it has built in wi-fi, 400mhz and 64 ram/rom.
It is also much cheaper than the equivelant ipaq.

Don,

I've given up with PDAWin and ordered Total Remote, but can't find the adaptor needed for the ipaq 5450 anywhere. Where can I get this? Is it a proprietry adaptor? Sorry but I can't work this out from your website.

I'll let you know how I get on with your software but I really need to test it with both the consumer IR and the remote transmitter module.

Thanks for any help on this. And thanks for the positive attitude to support.

Ok, I sorted out the adaptor (just a smaller jack plug).

Trouble is, I can't get Total remote to work (at all).

I'm using an HP 5450 and PDAWin and Nevo both work (though PDAWin is a real pig with IR codes as many of those that work with the pronto fail with PDAWin).

It doesn't matter whether I use IRDA, the supplied widget from Total Remote or the installed CIR I get nothing off Total Remote.

Anyone have any clue how to solve this?

Total Remote has some issues with CCF use in version 2.0
Don Stratton is looking into it currently, and has acknowledged there is a problem. See this thread:

Thanks hjortskov,

I'd already checked that thread as it happens.

I've been doing some more testing and it turns out I can get Total Remote working in non CCF mode so that would square with what you say.

Any idea (anyone) how fast these issues might be turned around?

You guys probably will kill me for saying this but if money is no object as stated in the beginning of this thread, don't even hesitate: buy a PRONTO. I have both IPAQ 3800 with extender (working OK but not 100% of all commands) and a Pronto.
My veridict still is:

If you want the best in remote controlling buy a real Remote (no agenda, internet etc, tough)
It's for me the only solution which works 100% without asking for hours/days of fiddling around to get it working.

Got to agree with buxe on this one.

I have 5450 and TVR, can get it to do some controlling, but not very well, it learns codes then does not replay them so they work, and you then have to spend days manually examining them and editing them to get it to work.

Have not tried Total Remote yet, but it would be impractical on a 5450 as the mic socket is at the bottom of the unit. If it will support the CIR module that will be great.

Netremote now is also beginning to support native IR modules.

But if you want an easy life, and an accurate learning, still go for the proper learning remote(s)

this is quite simple there are 2 mAIN MODELS FOR YOU TO CHOOSE FROM THE IPAQ 2210 comes with bluetooth not Wifi but has an CF slot that could be used for Wifi
[Link: ipaqhq.com]
the other is the amix x3i no Cf slot just SD but has wifi and cheaper both unit have a CRI so should be ok in a typical room.

the x3i can have d pad and 3 of the 4 buttons programmed using software called PDAWIN not sure about othe software.

2210 still not sure about the buttons and am trying to find out more info on this but it does come with nerv software that does use the hard buttons for volume etc. my only issue is i dont want to use nerv

hope this helps
