I have a PalmIIIxe and an iPAQ PDA. I'm debating between purchasing either Pacificneotek's Omniremote software for the Palm or pdawin's TV remote controller software for my iPAQ.

I'll be using the PDA converted to a remote for the operation of my home theater (macros...) and for the operation of several X-10 devices via an IR interface (the X-10 operational factor is critical).

I was wondering if anyone has recommendations and/or experience with either platform/software as I would like to purchase and "master" only one software package.

Thanks for everyone's help!!!

I prefer PDAwin TV Remote Controller for any PocketPC. I've tried Omniremote before, but was not as impressed.

The nice thing about PDAwin's software, is that it is almost an exact emulator of a Pronto TSU6000. You even use the same software (ProntoEdit) to create the CCF files for it. You can find tons of information all around the place here at Remote Central regarding files, tips, tutorials, etc. for making CCFs for Pronto remotes.....therefore, you can just apply these to the PDAwin software.

And it's also in color on the iPaq....so that's a definite plus!

I would recommend PDAWIN for you because you own a non-color Palm pda.

The best emulation of Pronto is netremote, which you can download for free on www.netremote.org. Unfortunately it doesn't support the builtin IR yet. But the author considers to put it into one of the next releases.
If that's finally coming, I think PDAWin will be out of business instantly.
I am using PAWin's TV-Remote for now, but the missing repeat is a fast growing problem and since they are not really improving their software I would not recommend to buy it at this moment.

Wilhelm, I really do have to disagree with you.

With each dot release, PDAWin has been improved. In particular the cpu loading is less with each release and it's more stable with CCF files that contain large amounts of bitmaps that would choke a traditional Pronto Pro.

The work they have done to pry propriatary information out of both Dell and HP/Compaq to take care of new hardware was significant.

HP in particular was adamant about NOT releasing any low-level programming details about the modified CF card slot interface on the 39xx and 54xx machines *or* about the new CIR module. It took a lot of work on the part of some persistant users and the PDAWin guys to get the info needed to program for the new hardware.

Netremote is indeed a fine piece of software, but as you point out is USELESS to the average user without a direct IR beaming capability. USELESS. This is a far more serious deficiency than missing a keypress function.

Your personal frustration on a single item, repeating key presses, is not grounds to call for the closure of PDAWin business. A bit harsh.

PDAWIN has worked well for me also. Love the color on my Axim X5. I went for the IR extender from Electric Dog Ventures as well (www.myelectricdog.com). This extends my range to ~50 feet.

I'm a happy PDAwin user too, but I'm also glad that there is some real competition on the horizon.
