I have been using Prontos for a number of years, and it is time to move on to a color display. I was all set to buy a factory refurb TSU6000 for about $465 when I stumbled on this forum.

I very much like the idea of a handheld as my remote, especially one which has the potential for web access for TV listings, etc., and other useful tasks.

From the discussions here it appears that the PDAWin software, despite the unpredictable update history and uncommunicative developers, is the best platform solution for a former Pronto user.

It also seems in many respects that the Dell Axim would be the be the best hardware choice from a price/performance point of view, and I was all ready to jump for it, when it dawned on me that the IR extender (which I know has also been the subject of some angst) occupies the CF slot, which would mean, I think, that I could not simultaneously use the Axim for a remote and wireless web access, since the wireless card uses the same slot.

First of all, is that correct?

Secondly, what other PDAs would be good choices if wireless is also a requirement? I read the review of the iPaq, but it seems that its IR extender adds additional bulk to the unit because it fits into a sleeve around the unit, and I also have read several posts suggesting that PDAWin doesn't seem to work with the iPaq.

Given the the apparent fact that the developers of PDAWin don't respond to users, if the software works for a particular device, great, but it seems dangerous to buy a device on which it doesn't work today.

Any thoughts or suggestions would really be appreciated, including, I guess, to go ahead and get the Pronto!!!!

Thanks,

Kenny Frank

How do you plan to access the web with a Pronto?
If web access is a must there are dual slotted sleeves you can purchase for various types of pocket pcs.

I have a iPAQ 3670. It seems to have a strong enough built-in IR to go at leat 10+ feet. I have a compact Flash Wireless network card in the unit as well.

You may want to look for a 3600 series on ebay and use it for your remote

The new compaqs (2210, IIRC) do look promising and might be the ticket:
-they have consumer IR (w/Nevo :( ), so there shouldn't be any need for an IR extender
-they come with bluetooh, which, although not as fast as WiFi provides a network connection
-they look pretty slick, are quite small, have a nice screen, etc.

If all else fails you still have a SDIO and CF slots which can add to the built-in capabilities

Does the consumer IR with Nevo work with apps like NetRemote, or only with the Nevo interface, which seems pretty limited.
