Hi,
vito technologies has released a new version of their remote software. ([Link: vito-tech.com])
I downloaded it a few days ago and I think it has potential. They even managed to get the screen-buttons to repeat which PDAWin seems to try at least for a year now, since I first raised the issue with them.
Certainly Vito-Remote doesn't support CCF's (yet) but it is customizable and you can design your layouts even without using a PC. So for people who only want this as a replacement for a handful of remotes this is quite good. It surly is not perfect yet, but have a look.
After my first impessions I mailed my findigs to them and the email was answered in a matter of hours. This is what they said:

>Hi Wilhelm,

>We'll udoubtedly work on this though it seems to be a >hardware
>problem. More options are planned for Remote in >future: CCF support,
>timer, voice control, etc. but for now we've got a >bunch of work here
>so I can't tell you the exact date for the next >release. Let's wait
>for April.
>We plan the new site soon and among other features it >will contain a
>user forum with links, faq, supports and vtr files >exchange for
>Remote, too. Stay tuned!
>
>Let me know if you have more questions or comments.
>
>Best regards,

That sounds promising to me...

Hey thanks, Wilhelm. It does look promising. When they begin to support CCF files, I will definitely be interested. In the meantime, it's just good that PDAWin has some competition.

Regards. Jay.

Wilhelm,
What about the button action on press issue, rather than on release and can you do a continuous button press, like one would need to do for light dimming and volume control? Those are my biggest grips with PDAWin.

Yes you can. I have had severe problems controlling the volume on my Yamaha AX1 because PDAWin does support neither press-action on a screen button nor the right repeat sequences required for the NEC-protocol Yamaha uses.
Vito-Remote handles both. It isn't perfect though, because the repeat doesn't work correctly when assigned to a hardware button, but they are working on this (at least they say).

Wilhelm,
That's good news, but what about IR range limitations on the iPAQ when not using an IR extender such as Electric Dog, which I believe is only supported by PDAWin? Also if Vito-Remote can solve the action on button press issue, why can't PDAWin do the same? You did say that Vito button press can work like a press and hold needed for volume control and dimming functions? Also when you mention button repeat, what are you referring to? Arnie...

I use an external booster, so I don't have problems with the IR-Range.
What I ment was, that the repeat of the hardware buttons does not yet work as smoothly as the screen button.
The Problem with PDAWin is, that the are not willing to satisfy users who already bougth there software. They are putting much effort in supporting more and more devices but really don't fix things.
The mentioned button press and the repeat problems are not new and I mailed reported the problems several times to them. They promised to fix this over a year ago, so much for promises.
Unfortunately at the moment I think it is still the best remote software but I suppose not for much longer...
