Hi there,

I bought an IPAQ 3950 for use as remote control for my home cinema. Nevo works and can learn all codes from my stuff. So far no problem.

Problem is the very bad IR range of that machine: A maximum of 3 meters (with some equipment only 2.5 meters) is not what I expected. Even then I have to point directly to the device I want to control, like aiming with a dart arrow ........

I sent a mail to Compaq: I should apply an IR patch. Done. Nothing changed.
I put a message in the Nevo message board. Got one answer: "We found out that it is necessary to point directly to devices to control with the Ipaq ... or so".

Damned. I am going to sell this thing again. Even the cheapest remote control works better!!!

I read here some messages from people saying the control "devices 5 meters away"? How? Do you use some time of IR extender? I found it impossible to believe ....

Has anybody an idea how to solve the problem? Replace the IR LED in the IPAQ doesn't work with the 39xx models; I read many articels about the 38xx models.

Help! I will kick this thing out of the next window!

Thanks.

Best regards,

Kalle

Kalle,

IMO, you should try TV Remote Controller and a PDA-ir extender. TVR gives you CCF support with it's infinite flexibility and the PDA-ir gives you the range you need, and you'll have no directivity problems.

I am running this set up on a 3635 and I have no problems controlling my equipment from 30 feet (around 10 meters?)

If you're going to use it with the 3950, make sure you get TVR 5.2. If this is going to be a dedicated remote control, then my recommendation would be to sell the 3950 and pick up a good used 3635 with CF sleeve and save yourself a couple of dollars (or marks, as it were)

Regards. Jay.

Hi Jay,

thanks for the answers. I will look for this TV Remote Controller. 10 meters range is more than I expected. About 4 - 5 meters would do good.

I thought about selling the 3950 again and buying a Pronto from Philips but now I am investigating that TV Remote a bit more. Where can I buy/order it?

Oh, BTW: The Germans doesn't have "marks" anymore, they have as many other wisely European nations :-) the EURO curency now .....
(but there are times, when I wish back the good, old German Mark ... :-)

Regards,

Kalle

Oh yes, the Euro. Is it only the Swiss who are holding out against the Euro?

You can get TVR at www.pdawin.com . You can download a trial version or pay 14.95 USD for the full version.

Also, to get good range you'll need the PDA-ir extender from www.laser.com . You'll also need a CF sleeve for your 3950 if you don't already have one.

Download any of the hundreds of CCF system files from this site and test it out.

Good Luck. Jay.

The IPAQ 3950, which is the European version of the US 3955, can be bought in Germany for about 530 - 600 Euro. www.palmparadies.de is pretty cheap.
