Has anyone tried the Palm Zire as a remote? If I have to dedicate a PDA for remote controlling, it'd have to be cheap and this one is.

I have a Zire 21 and have tried several versions of Palm Remote, all of which have frozen my palm.

I have also tried several versions of OmniRemote, nove of which would recognise the Zire's CPU ID and so performed a soft reset.

I have a Palm 72... I am a home theater installer... I have used just about every universal remote out there from the el cheapos on up to the $800 tpo $1000 units...

Out of curiosity I purchased the novii remote blaster the other day.

My opinion??? --- Totally awesome!!! I am now going to switch over using Palms w/the novii blasters for all of my systems. There simply isn't another device out there (that I know of), that can even begin to come close in terms of ease of set-up, graphics etc..

I just sent away for the new Deluxe version, as it will let me program in Macros... (chains of commands, so that you can just hit one button to do a long string of commands i.e. Turn on the TV, set the input, turn on the amplifier, set the input,
turn on the DVD player, start play, set volume levels.... all with one button press)...

Although a lot of guys in my trade my think it is a little nerdly, to use a Palm for this... Hey it kicks ass on most other stuff out there (that I know about anyway, and I don't know everything)!

But it solves a huge, huge problem for me... My clients always get freaked out trying to operaqte their systems, and most of the Universal Remotes out there have confusing and hard to read buttons, and seldom work as well as they advertise... The other really cool thing about using the Palm 72, is most of my clients use their remotes when watching a TV show or Movie in their theaters with the lights down or off... The PALM72 is this totally bright hi-resolution full color screen!
I am still kind of in shock that I didn't investigate this option a long time ago... I could have saved myself a lot of grief and my clients... along with money... No more Philips, Marantz or High-End Remotes for me!!! Plus... You get all the PDA stuff to boot!
How could you lose?
