Hi,

I'm new to the forum, so hopefully this hasn't already been posted....

Just wondering how the new Dell Axim X5 PDA will measure up as a remote control device... (i.e. power of IR sender, etc...)

I doubt that anyone will even have one in their hands for a few weeks yet, but when they do, could they please post any opinions here?

Also, is there a general concensus on the best program for a Pocket PC OS remote?

Thanks in advance,

Shneebs.

The IR port on this guy will probably be just as crappy as the ones out there now. Its probably best to find a IR repeater that will work with the Axim...perhaps once it comes out and people buy it, it'll be supported.

Could you be more specific on "crappy" in terms of range? I'm about 6' from my gear and really want to buy this.
TIA,

I have an Axim and it works to 5 feet with Total Remote. Pretty poor, as the Toshiba e310 goes almost 30 feet! Face it, IrDA sucks.

Just ordered an Axim X5 myself (the 400MHz version). I found this extender that is supposed to work with most PocketPCs (incl. the Dells):

They also make a software UltraMote which seems a little too basic (no CCF support). Check chart here:

Now it would be nice if it could work with TV Remote !

The IR range on the Axim pretty much blows - you will be lucky if you can get 6 feet out of the built-in IR. For the devices in my home theater it is more like 4 feet.

I'm waiting to receive my Axim. I did email the Ultramote IR extender guy to see if it works and he says it is compatable with the axim, but he says it only works withy his software.
I wanted to use TVremote 5.0 software from pdawin.com with this remote extender. Has anyone tried it?

Want to save 25% on your new Axim X5?

I ordered one from Dell, received it and then decided it was not for me so I called them to return it. They offered me a free printer or scanner to keep it, then 15% off my order and finally 25% off (the max. they're autorized). I returned it anyway. I thought I'd share this info with you :-)

Hey Ian,
Curious as to why you returned your Axim and also how you got them to offer you the 25% discount? That's pretty substantial.

I'm considering one of these myself as I mentioned in my other post. Did you try any Remote Control software on it and if so what were your experiences.
Thanks,

Brad
