I'm planning to buy a PDA and would like to use it as a remote (in addition to the more traditional PDA functions). It looks like some PDAs have a more powerful IR transmitter, while others are only effective at a distance of only a few feet. Since there are so many choices of PDAs out there, what type of specifications should I be looking for regarding IR signal?

Also, is there a general consensus on which platform (PPC or Palm) is best for A/V remote control?
Best software?
Best PDA?

Any interest in generating a "buyer's guide" thread for PDAs that double as good A/V remotes?

Thanks,

John

I favour TVRemote from pdawin.com. I use an iPAQ 3850 with it. But unless you are planning to use it for a short distance, I think you have to get some IR-extension. I suggest an CF-extender.
I don't suppose there is any PDA that is likely to perform very well without a booster.

I actually decided today to go with a refurbed Toshiba E310 (pocket PC). Don't know if it will need an IR booster or not. I'll play with it for a while after I get it and probably check back here for more help on IR boosters and remote software.

Thanks
