I am considering the purchase of an e740, using PDWin remote software to control a home theatre. The ir port on the e740 is on the left side. I plan to produce custom color Pronto CCF file in landscape mode, so that I can hold the PDA sideways, the ir would point up...my equipment is all only about 5 feet away just over my right shoulder.

I also plan to access my home WiFi network, with that landcape mode browser. I will also get an extended battery, more memory at some point as well.

Any thoughts on this setup, comfort of holding the PDA sideways, ir range etc ? Starting at about $500 plus $20 for the PDAWin remote software I get the equivilent to a new
320 x 240 widescreen color pronto, mini WiFi surfstation/email reader/MP3 player/PDA. This seems to be a reasonable setup...any major downsides that I am overlooking.

I do realize that Pronto Edit does not do landscape mode text, so I'll have to make do with bitmaps of text, or live with reading the text sideways. I would probally do a simple one or two page multi-component setup with just the essential buttons on each piece of equipment.

I assume that an ir CF card , compatible with the e740 would come out at some point as well, allowing portrait mode ir transmision to my equipment.

The compatibility issue for a CF card is a software issue. PDA-ir will work in any CF slot as long as there is software that supports it for the particular PDA.

I e-mailed pdawin.com about 2 weeks ago asking. they said that they do not have enough info on e740 to add IR extender into Remote 5.1. However when I replied and asked if Toshiba did not provide them with enough detail they never replied.

go figure.. I am still coding the menus and hoping that they will finally release some support for e740.

Compaq supplied rather extensive and complete documentation. You can see an example at...

Neither HP nor Toshiba appear to be as forthcoming.

FWIW, i've been using TVRemote5.1 with my e740 for the past week with no problems. I haven't checked the range further that 15 ft, but it seems to work just fine other than having to hold it sideway (lack of landscape mode)

It would be great if we got a review of total Remote.. it seems cool.

I was going to buy it, but from the site's description I have no idea what the heck am I buying...(I know software.... hardware?..) How the heck does it use my PDA's sound to extend the range?

They just give you a cheesy generic description of stuff.

It took a while, but now there is more info at Griffin Mobile's web site:

There is now a demo version!
