The bargain is that the Palm is a top notch orginizer, and has the capabilities to run thousands of other programs that a Pronto can not.
Omniremote is a $20 program. That is the cost of the remote portion of the Palm, not the full cost of the Palm.
The fact that Pronto owners want to continue to keep their heads buried in the sand, and say that this makes no diffrence is incredible to me.
I recently purchased a new PALM 3c (the colour version of the PALM)at a E-BAY dutch auction for $187 delivered.
The people in the Pronto to community will lead others to believe that the Pronto Pro is going to be a real value at a retail price of $1150 with the price of the ir repeater system included.
Hey maybe they will have an Easter Egg included for that price.

What would be the best handheld to use for the Omniremote. A Palm III or a Visor?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum but....

Pronto's forum contains an enormous thread discussing the problems with using it with most of Pace's Digital Cable boxes 'cos they use the IRDA standard. Can the Palm help out here? In native form, the Palm is native IRDA. I personaly haven't tried this Palm software out 'cos I have a Palm Vx which I believe does not work with the booster. However, I do use a Pronto and, fortunately, the correct type of Pace box.

I'll add my insight to the Palm Pilot w/ Omni Remote vs. Pronto. Yes, I've used both, and went to the pronto after using the Palm for several months. The Pronto wins hands down. There is really no comparison between the two. The Omni Remote SW is buggy - numerous shut downs etc..., it's a nice toy, fun to play around with, but not a real remote. I now exclusivly use my infared dongle and Omni Remote while in hotels - so I don't have to use those nasty hotel remotes (anyone else see that dateline broadcast on the cleanliness hotel rooms - the remote is the dirtiest thing in the room). Anyway, my 2 cents on this subject, the palm is a nice toy remote, but not even close to a usable one.

I went out the other day and purchased a PalmIIIc from Best But for $299.00, then downloaded the Omni Remote software and the ORDesktop software, It replaced 8 remotes on my coffee table and I am a hero with the wife. I know the pronto can be had for the same amount, but it doesnt store my cd's, phone #'s or run my games if I get bored with TV I love the product and have had no problems with IR range.

I programed EVERY device I have into this little gem, TIVO, SAT Receiver, Go-Video DVD-VCR Combo, Zenith Big Screen TV, Sony SS Receiver, and all my other TV's in the house.

Hats off to Peter for a great product, keep improving it, I would like to have nicer Icons!!! :)

Has anyone tried The Wedge (a palm craddle with a built-in IR tranmsitter) and Wedge TV (software) combo? How does it stack up to OmniRemote, with or without the IR transmitter addon?

I have been "monitoring" this thread and want to chime in. I own the Pronto TU2000 and a Visor Deluxe with OmniRemote hardware module and software.

Misconception #1: "PDA's can perform every function of a Pronto." WRONG! Omniremote cannot learn many functions of my new RCA Ultimate TV remote keyboard. It can learn but not transmit correctly the volume codes for my Yamaha 5280 Receiver. It is hit and miss at best.

Misconception #2: "The Pronto is limited in terms of it's ability to perform advanced logic or store database info."

WRONG! Add SuperNudelist to a Pronto controlling a 400 CD changer and you have a KILLER remote that will que up and play a disk from your library by albumn, artist, or song title, at the press of a button.

OmniRemote has potential (only with an add-on IR emitter), but the company has not delivered a software package that holds a candle to Pronto. It is buggy and crude. Spend the $250 on a first class Pronto solution and save yourself a $1,000 worth of frustration trying to make a "jury rigged" PDA combo work. You need the right tool to do the right job.

Maybe someone will develop a Windows CE software package for a color PDA (HP Jornada, etc.) Until then, Pronto is king of the mountain.

Choose one platform and live with it's inherent strengths and weaknesses - comparison is pointless. OR get BOTH a Pronto and a PDA and you have your cake and eat it too.

I totally agree with Dwayne. Here are a few issues I've thought of:

1. You have to use a spare Palm Pilot. What if you're not home and someone else needs the remote?

2. OmniRemote software doesn't use bitmap images.

3. Pronto more durable than palm, but a Palm Vx remote would be cool.
Look at this: [Link: pdapex.com]

4. Screen on Palm much smaller. Use stylis?

Bottom line, spend the money on a Pronto.

very interesting post.

A couple of questions:

I have a Radio Shack IR remote extender(ir repeater). Will this be suitable for extending The Palm Pilots range so that it can be fully used as a remote control?

Also, i would like to use the Palm with a software program like Girder to control my HTPC (home theater computer used as a scaleable dvd player). Anyone? If anyone hasen't used it for HTPC purposes specifically, surely someone has tried to control their various pc application via the Palm Pilot....

I'm hoping i could use my wireless IR keyboard to teach the Palm Pilot commands to run various computer applications.

Thanks for the help in advance

I don't know whether this affects purpose built universal remote controls, but beware if you want your pacific neotek omniremote remote extender to work with a UK digital TV set top box. The IR system used is completely different (does not modulate a carrier signal) and cannot be controlled with the palm pilot based device.

This was very disapointing for me, since my current cheapo universal remote will already control everything I have except the digibox and I bought the omniremote so that I could control ALL my gadgets.

I own a Phillips Pronto TS1000. My CDs are stored in two CD changers (both Sony), one that holds 400 CDs, and the other 200 CDs, and are connected to each other to cross-fade while playing. I have all (OK, not all, but most) of CDs named. Is there a way that I can use to download the titles from the CD changers into Pronto (or a Palm Pilot VIIx)? This could save hours entering the names into the software from scratch!
