It looks like you missed one of the major points made in this and other threads concerning using the Palm as a remote control, the use of the ir repeater that is attached directly to the Palm .
This gives you a 150 ft. range, thru walls, without aiming the remote. Why anybody would choose the ir module over this is beyond me.
Oh well,THERE IS NONE SO BLIND AS THOSE THAT WILL NOT SEE.

This thread looks great : I'm getting tired of my one-for-all topline 8 and its predefined buttons.
A recap article would be quite welcome to help people decide which PDA to buy if it is to be used (also) as a universal remote control.
Any information on the Ipack's capabilities ?
Is its IR module good enough. Is it possible to add an external IR module on it too like on Palms. Will the external IR module be facing backwards like on palms (if I understood well) ? Is there already something like OR for win CE ?
Thanks in advance
Mikal

I considered the IR repeater. I don't care for the looks of them. Something that had a "Palm" integrated look would be great. So, part of the problem is that I am not blind, and I don't like the looks of the repeaters I have seen. I have moved on to the Radio Shack 15-1994 for $30. So far, so good. Offer still stands, 2 month old Palm IIIe, OmniRemote software and module - $150

After seeing all the posts mentioning the Palm's short range, and use of the add-on, I had to write this.

My Palm IIIxe works fine from 20 feet, and I'd try it from farther away, but I can't (there's a wall in my way).

The newer Palms have a much stronger IR than the first ones.

I had great luck using the new cheep m100 Palm Pilot which is backlit and has pretty strong IR. The remote program is wonderful, was sooo easy to setup. Since I already have the 4040 IR X10 converter it was easy to create a single button that turns off the lights and the TV and then turns on the night lights. The button is labeled Night. What a great set of products to keep us moving less and less :)

The RF extender for the Palm Pilot looks like a great investment too ([Link: smarthome.com]). Having a wide range / touch screen interface to control the A/V equipment and lighting for $200 total (new) is pretty cheep.

-- end of palm discussion - about other remotes .. --
I also have 7 in one and 6 in one remotes, they are both great. Use the 6-in-one in the living room where all the equipment is. There the IR X10 converter inputs x10 codes into the walls (to control lights). The 7-in-one RF works from anywhere in the house, very nice. Use that to control the tv in the bedroom and turn down the tv in the living room if too loud/no on e there. Also it controls the lights from anywhere in the house. I also have some remotes from www.x10.com such as the remote mouse and their version of a six in one ... these cheep ones don't have pip, swap etc. So if you have a fancy set, they are no good. May as well get the The square box remotes for x10 that have 8 on / off buttons are the best for just lighting. Then get Radio Shack remotes for all purpose remotes
in living and bed rooms. They are quality.

Hope you all have as much luck with this as I have.

Another great experience ....
If you have ever wondered about hooking up a PC to a large TV (i.e. to surf the net / play DVD's, 3d Games, MP3s, etc) the RCA MM52100 52 inch Monitor / Television is a Monitor (normal VGA jack) so the picture is super clear. I just got one and am SUPER happy. Also it acts as a USB hub, so you can plug in Keyboard, mouse, joysticks, etc into the front of the tv and plug the USB connection from the back of the PC to the TV, along with A/V and VGA. The picture is amazing when viewing 800x600 computer screen. It is not the distorted junk you get from normal A/V connections, it is crisp and readable from the couch 10 or more feet away (need a wireless keyboard/mouse too, may want to try 900mhz keyboard). I have the logitech mouse/keyboard setup (100 bucks) it works good from about 6 feet from extended rf base. Note: The TV does not convert convenstional interlaced analong to progressive scan or anything fancy, so if picture quality of un-converted conventional analog input is of upmost importance, this may not be the set for you. If you want a kick ass 52" computer monitor with great DVD and Digital class input .. you have found your set :)

This thread is great ...

On price, I went for the RC5000i over a pilot and bought a second hand colour HP Jornada 420 for £50!

When a colour Pronto/RC comes out for $1000 I believe there will be some contest over colour PPCs and HPCs.

I am currently looking for and deciding wether to write some killer CE app for remote control.
Does anyone have anything they can add to this?

CAn someone help me??? I have htis darn Emerson TV/VCR,
but never had the remote. I really don't want to buy a new one for $40, and the Universals I've had so far don't work with it. Can anyone suggest a workaround?
Does Omniremote have a list of devices built-in or does it function as a learning remote only?

Thanks,
Ken

If your techno savvy then you could get the palm to control your AV and tweak it. If you want to simply enjoy your home entertainment system, have the palm to organize your schedule and have a universal remote like the pronto to control your AV.

Unless Palm will be designed for RC purposes (increase IR transmit power, increase pages etc) then get something like pronto.

Me, i have pen and notebook to organize my schedule, have a computer to organize my e-mails, and recently got a pronto to control my AV. Make everything simple and enjoy life's little pleasures.

Anyway, i thank the people who are explaining how can a palm pilot can be used as a remote controller. So other people who are more interested to maximize the use of their palm can have a choice.

Peace!

I own a Palm V and a Pronto, so I feel I'm somewhat unbiased here. The only thing I have to add about the discussion about which is better is this. It seems that the basic premis is that the Palm and software for it, does a pretty good job doing what the Pronto does, but is cheaper than a Pronto. You can go on Ebay any time and buy a Pronto TS1000 for anywhere from 150 to 185, so how is 250 for the Palm combination a dollar saver? And for that matter new TS2000's go for 250 and under on Ebay all the time!
