The UltraMote website points out that the software supports the 3600 and 3700 series, both of which are StrongARM Pocket PCs. The new 3800 series is also a StrongARM chip user, but running the program on my iPaq seizes the OS. I'll send off a not to the company to ask why this might be... ... Mike

The software hangs my iPAQ too, and I have a 3700 series! Not sure about your's but mine stops responding when I start the learning process. I can't even get the task manager up to kill the process. Soft reset everytime :( .

My iPaq 3650 locks up during the learn process also! I also need a soft-reset to recover. I tried installing it to both my CF card and internal memory, with the same result each time (lock up). So, we now know that it locks up on 3800, 3700, and 3600 series iPaqs. That doesn't leave much left!

That's truly funny, you guys. The whole market that the software is aimed at, and it doesn't work on any of them. Talk about Quality Assurance... .

Mine hangs right after the program starts on the very first screen. I only tried it on my MMC card, because I have way too much stuff in internal memory already. ... Mike

I e-mailed CardonWare yesterday, and received the speedy reply below:

To CardonWare:

Nifty looking product you have there. As a regular member of remotecentral.com, I noticed the annoucement about UltraMote.

I downloaded a trial version; you specifically mention support for the 3600 and 3700 series iPaqs. I have the new 3850; the software seems to seize up my Pocket PC.

Since the OS is Windows 2002, I would assume it should run O.K. Am I wrong in this assumption?

Thanks.

... Mike Riley

>>>>>Thanks for taking a look at UltraMote. We have looked into the 38xx, but unfortunately it has some significant logic differences from the H36xx and H37xx, including a lower power infrared section, which may not provide enough range for a remote. We can put you on a mailing list for the 38xx in case we find a solution.

Best Regards

Thanks for the comments. We have created and posted a FAQ page to our site. You can view it at:
[Link: ultramote.com]

If you still have "lock-ups" or any other problems after reading the FAQ and Jim's post below, please e-mail us at [email protected].

Excerpt from FAQ:
Q: How can I tell UltraMote is Learning?
A: ... UltraMote ignores all other screen taps while awaiting and analyzing the infrared command from your remote (except a soft reset), to ensure the highest quality capture of the command. UltraMote will appear to 'lock up' until it receives an IR signal. When UltraMote has learned the command, and waited the selected Learn Timeout period, the black button outline will dissapear, and the 'end button learn' sound will play, indicating success for the selected button. You may then continue to Learn additional buttons, or exit Learn mode, which will cause the LED to stop flashing.

Hi Mike,

We finally got our FAQs completed (full version at www.ultramote.com), which I believe can cover some of the items in this thread. For example, the iPAQ 3800 does indeed use the StrongArm, but has other logic differences from the H3600/3700. We plan to support the H3800 in a future release. The current version supports the H3600/3700, but does not currently support flash-based operation.

We have many people using UltraMote successfully with the H3600 and H3700 series. We do recommend that users make sure that sounds are enabled within the main PPC settings, as UltraMote setup is easier with the built in audio prompts. We should also note in the documentation that until a user defines the first location, they will see a blank screen which some may interpret as a hang.

Of course UltraMote, like all software, can be improved so we appreciate any feedback on prospective features for our future releases.

Thanks

Jim

Well, I've heard of quick support response, but this is just silly: today I received an e-mail from the UltraMote team:

Yes, we heard you and put the H3800 at the top of our priority list! We are announcing today the UltraMote is now available for the iPAQ H3800 series at www.ultramote.com. The best news is that the range is better than we had anticipated from the component specs. However, we encourage you to evaluate UltraMote with all of your equipment to ensure you are satisfied.

Note - for the H3800, please ensure that you have set up infrared reception in your Main>>Settings>>Connections>>Beam screen before using UltraMote. Additional Setup and Operating Instructions, as well as a Frequently Asked Questions list are available on the www.ultramote.com site.

Thanks for your requests and your patience. We hope you enjoy using UltraMote.

Ultramote sounds like a great idea, particularly with an IR extender. Do you have any plans to add discrete code capacity to it?

Without discrete codes, I still can't hit one button to start a DVD, since it will merely toggle the on/off and TV/Input state of the equipment.

Cheers, Carl.

Has anyone overcome the lockup issues? What kind of range do you get? My understanding is that the LEDs used on the IPAQ aren't very strong so best range is 1 to 3 meters.

A IR CF card was just announced, which claims 50 feet IR range. Nifty idea. Also, I read at pocketpcpassion that macros are now supported in the newer software release.

Has anyone gotten any of these software remotes to work with Tivo? I have an IPAQ 3835.

I've used the Ultramote on my Ipaq 3650 and experienced the same issues. However, I played with it a bit and if (during the learning process) just tap the button on the "teacher" remote (instead of holding it and waiting for the confirmation) the "hang" disappears. Try it, it worked for me. :)
