I see alot of messages and have discussed with friends about using PDA as a universal remote. Is it possible to add a device to my laptop and aquire the software to run my home theater IR commands?

Thanks,
Tim

I would like to do the same thing. I have done a little bit of programming in VB before, but I would rather not have to go that route for this project (not to mention that VB probably wouldn't be powerful enough to handle such a task). If anyone has any ideas, please let us know...it would be greatly appreciated.

Im not sure about the built in IR port of a laptop, but here is a link to a IR Blaster you can make yourself, and I believe it comes with software. A lot of people are using these for home automation, so I guess they do work!

I have tried the Japanese software found on the website Cammo suggested. Unfortunately wireless link software in Windows Me is tying up the the IR port so have not been able to try it out but it looks good.

I'm doing something similar. I'm getting an IR emitter for my desktop PC (from http://www.smarthome.com), which I have connected to my components. I'll then remote control the desktop with remote control software over a wireless lan, from a laptop. This seems like the ideal way to do what you're looking for, but requires a desktop in addition to the laptop, and some programming.

The Slink-e (available several places online) connects to a PC via a serial port (or via a USB-serial port adapter) and will allow you to record IR commands to your hard drive, without limit (unlike other similar devices). It ships with an Active X control for you to use in VB (or elsewhere)and create a custom interface for using these commands back out of the unit via its Xantech-compatible IR emitter. Theoretically, almost anything is possible. I have one back-ordered and can't wait for it to come in. I have a Sony pen-tablet/LCD monitor PC and intend to control my whole home theater sys through it.

I am looking for the same type of thing, I have a PC with a USB IrDa port, and want to control a VCR/SAT in another room using a One for All remote extender, that I currently use with a universal remote. I don't really have any programming experience, but an willing to try with full instructions.

Tony,

How did your project work out with the Slink-e and Sony Tablet pc? I'm thinking about doing the same thing with a Fujitsu Point 510 tablet pc and was wondering if there were any major issues that came up that I should be aware of. Also, is your tablet pc connected to the internet for tv listings, etc? Are you using this setup for home automation as well? Thanks!
