Which is better, considering price & functionality? I know the philips is a dedicated remote but how does the Palm compare as a remote? Also how quickly do these things go through batteries? I can get the Pronto 2mb for £150 ($210) & IIIxe for £99 ($140). Any thoughts on this would be helpful.

I would definitely go with the Pronto.
If you get the Palm, you would need an IR booster or something similar. You will also need to buy the software.
Finally there is no SW for the palm that will give it the functionality of the Pronto. All current SW (that I know of) is much more limited.
