Here is a post I made awhile ago concerning using the PALM as a tool to control a mega cd changer.I have added some additional information to this post.

The Palm Pilot works quite well in this area.
What I have done is entered the names of the disc and each track into memo files on the Pilot.
Each disc is a separate memo entry, with each track for that disc listed in that memo entry.
I also enter the number that the disc ocupies in my 200 disc changer.
Using the the find feature you can locate any track in the 200 discs by writing a few letters of the track you are looking for.
The disc and track number are listed so with one press of a hard button to change the application back to the OMNI REMOTE portion of the PILOT you can program your cd player to play the track or disc you have just located.
Another nice feature is that with a click of a button the disc titles will be listed in alphabetical order.
You also have the ability to print out the list.

What I have added to this is macros to play my favorite tunes off of each disc.
I made very small macro buttons labeled with just the number of the cd in the database.
To access your favorite songs off a particular cd you just use the find feature on the PALM or scroll thru the list of memos in the cd memo category you created see what cd number the cd has been designated to ,one click of hard button to switch back to the Omniremote program and use the macro button with the same number as the cd .
I currently have a screen with the my main cd control buttons and 50 macro buttons to play my favorite tunes off of fifty different cds.
Without the cd control buttons on the screen I could easily have 100 macro buttons on one screen.
In order to use buttons this small it is a must to have the ir extender that attaches directly to the remote mentioned in previous post.
Programing the macros goes very well using the ORDesktop program.

Hi Dan,
Looks like you have already solved my problem. I was looking for a way to simply store my mega Cd list on a universal remote and have concluded that a Palm is probably the simplest and cheapest way. I'm technical but have never programed a Palm, any chance you could send me a note on how to get started.
Thanks,
John

Just thought I would bring this thread back to the top so the newbies out there can see one of the things that a Palm can do as a remote control that no other remote control out there can do.

You don't get the searching and sorting but the Pronto also makes an extremely good controller for jukeboxes.

[Link: ox.compsoc.net] is my program for generating Pronto jukebox listings.

(Just thought I'd mention it. Maybe you meant that the Palm was the only remote that could do the dynamic searching and sorting, which is true (AFAIK). It'd definitely be nice if the Pronto could do that kind of thing! Ah well, they're both great devices with their own pros and cons.)

Does anyone know if the Palm can be used for two way IR with a hifi component?

The idea of a list of discs that can be sorted, and clicked on to play is great.

But how do you create the list? It looks like you have to type them all in by hand!

If you have CDJ and a slinke then your computer can talk to the CD player and build up a database of disc details (using CDDB and user entry). This list can be turned into a template for a pronto. Nice - but you have to buy the slinke hardware (see www.nirvis.com).

But - by using two-way IR the palm could ask a Sony CD changer directly what the discs are called. The sony two-way remote controls that come with some changers can do this (but only control the CD player), so a palm should be able to as well.

It could even ask for the track lengths are, work out an approximate CDDB ID, and then do a lookup (assuming internet access, possibly via a PC).

IF anyone could figureout how to incoprorate this with ordesktop/omniremote, I thought this would be helpful.
I use a program on my palm called CDlist, which works with a PC program called CDMAX that reads in all the CDs and CDDB's them. I put them each in folders according to type by viewing the files in notepad for the album name and then editing in the # slot in my CD player so that when i view them in CDlist they are in numerical order. Since this isnt a true catagorical database, I have to put the cd inorder on the jukebox and together in catagories.(1-10 classical 20-etc..)Is there any easier way?
Anyway this is great on the palm. just need to figure out how to make it active with remote.
