Is there any software available for my laptop to use the infra red port as a control for my hi-fi? It seems there is loads for PDAs, but nothing for PCs. Could I get a Windows CE emulator and then run the PDA software, for example? I'd be grateful for any advice.

Ditto here. I have a few Pentium touch screen tablets that I would like to use to control my HT. Anybody find anything yet?

I can't believe that nobody has been able to put this together. Anyone with any technical skills in programing IR please contact me to discuss this further.

The link to www.pcremotecontrol.com takes you to some software that does the opposite of what everyone here is actually looking to do. I believe everyone, including myself, would like to control appliances with our laptops. Instead, PC Remote Control allows an individual to control their PC using the remote controls from appliances (e.g., a remote from a TV).

Does anyone have any other ideas???

Actually, there is some software that does exactly what you require. The link is: [Link: veg.nildram.co.uk]

However, you will need to build a very simple circuit to act as sampling hardware (the IR port can't do this). Once you've got the samples (which work between computers), you can play them back using either his matching transmitter circuit or an IrDA port. It works perfectly; I'm using it right now. You may want to consider building his transmitter circuit to get better range, but on Sony VCRs and the like, the IrDA port on my laptop works over two metres or so.

I find it very hard to believe that you can't get software for the IrDA port on a laptop that will send the same codes as, say the Cambridge Audio M500 universal remote!

It would be great, for example, to be able to label my Mini Discs using my laptop as the 'remote'

Surely ... someone must know how to do this ?

Mail me/reply with details.

One reason very few have bothered writing software for the IRDA port is that on most laptops it isn't designed with anywhere near the range that common remote controls have. What good is a remote control if you have to sit within 4' of the device?

That's also why the above link leads you to a source for both a way to get IR commands into your PC and instructions for making a device to get those commands out of the PC.

TOM: what are your pentium touch screens and where did you get them? I'm looking for a touchscreen pad PC I can use on the couch, preferably with 802.11b wireless netowking built in. It would be nice if it had a 20 year uranium battery in it, too. ;-)
