Having studied the archives and forums of RC and others I have come to the conclusion that a PDA (even an old one like my redundant iPAQ 3850) is quite capable of functioning as a "Super Pronto". The RC review of the iPAQ/Nevo offering suggests as much. PDA's pack far more capability into far less space and cost way less than any color Pronto. Half decent software abounds and would flourish where it not for the inappropriate IR performance generally offered by PDA hardware.

What I would like to know is; why oh why has no enterprising electronics manufacturer produced an IR Blaster or Repeater along the lines of the numerous RF repeaters available - but with a simple Bluetooth interface direct to a PDA???

It seems to me an ideal set up. A single inexpensive component that could provide reliable and automatic control from any suitably equiped PDA. Bluetooth has just the right sort of range and the automated connection features desireable. No line of sight required, so control of AV units in a cabinet or from the next room is a given. Cheap and robust Bluetooth add-on in CF or SD form for those PDA's that don't have it built in.

I don't understand why this has not been done - or has it?

Does Nevo software works on a Dell PDA like the AXIM 51V? How do I get this software to install?

Commercially available repeaters such as Marmitek's PowerMid should work fine.
Even better than an IR repeater is a built-in solution such as the IR blaster from Laser Business Solutions ([Link: laser.com]).
I have been using it for a couple of years with my old iPAQ 3900. All I needed was a CF sleeve for the iPAQ (the Silver Slider) and the Pronto emulation SW, TV Remote Controller 5, from pdawin.com.

The Dell Axim X50 is not fully compatible with Nevo.

To provide a little background. NEVO is an embedded solution that turns a hand held device into a sophisticated and easy to use home controller. As such it is built into the device at the time of manufacture. Most current PDA’s, have an IrDA port that is not fully compatible with remote control CIR (Consumer IR) in light frequency, transmission intensity and angle of transmission. While using this port could be done for control, it leads to short transmission distances and narrow beam angles making it awkward to use the device. Also it has difficulty transmitting high frequency CIR used mostly by European Consumer Electronic manufacturers. So it is not a universal solution. Nevo's hardware + software solution addresses these problems by being designed into the PDA as part of its core capabilities.

The NEVO 1.0 remote control software is only available for the Compaq/HP iPAQ 2210, 2215, 3950, 3970 and 5450 series of Pocket PC's, at this time. It is embedded in the iPAQ's.

NEVO 2.0, which provides the universal home and digital media control functionality on the Mobile Media Companion, is currently only available on the HP RX3000 series iPAQ. NEVO is an embedded solution that is built into the device at the time of manufacture. Many of the new features in Nevo 2.0, including wireless digital media connectivity, are not fully compatible with other handhelds on the market.

The RX3115 and RX3715 iPAQ versions with Nevo 2.0 are available at HP.com.
