OK. I decided to go ahead with the Streamzap remote control. I also decided that I would purchase an X10 IR543 infrared controller and a power module and lighting module. Now I can truly turn off and on my HTPC using my Logitech remote. I had to adjust BIOS settings so that the PC would start up on power restore - not sure if every BIOS has that feature or not. So, Logitech sends X10 command to turn on power module which in turn starts up HTPC - albeit I have to wait 30 secs for it to boot up to show itunes -no logon required as just 1 user - then Logitech sends Streamzap commands to control the PC- after a fashion. On shutdown Logitech sends Streamzap shut down command and computer powers off - again takes about 20 secs then after 30 secs. it sends an X10 command to turn off power module. The bonus now is that I can dim the lighting in the room using the Logitech remote which is kinda neat.
This setup is not perfect- but what in life is, but it works for me. MY HTPC is about 4 years old 1GHZ AMD and the power supply doesn't shut the fans down on PC standby, so it is too loud for me when nothing else in the HT setup is running. Thus I had to turn PC off to stop fan noise and the only way I could see to do it was as described above.

You'd have a better chance training a dog to press the PC's on button based on a sound, generated by some device responding to an IR command!
I like that idea though I would take it one step further and develop an IR dog collar so that I could send an IR command to my dog, give her a little electro shock which after a few months of training she would remotely power on the PC for me:)
