Hi,

I am interested in acquiring the Streamzap PC IR remote control to control my HTPC. The Streamzap website indicates that there is the capability to turn off, hibernate etc the PC, BUT (in general) is there a way to turn on - or get out of hibernate- a PC via a USB port? Or is there any way short of an IR controlled UPS to turn on a PC with an iR control? Obviously the USB IR receiver needs power to work and thus that implies in order for it to work the USB port must have power even when the computeris "off" ( I know there are different levels of "off"). Any thoughts or suggestion? My long term goal is to integrate HTPC with my logitech harmony remote.THNX

True power up is based on Bios config, and is only available on limited motherboards.

You'd have a better chance training a dog to press the PC's on button based on a sound, generated by some device responding to an IR command!

Either that, or leave your PC in permanent standy-by, which I tend to do with my Harmony.

I want to accomplish the same as does doorknob. My HTPC does allow remote turn on (from a completely turned off state), but, this functionality only works about half the time--very frustrating). So I've been searching for a better approach.

What about a product named: imon ? There is a brief description of it on avsforum at: [Link: avsforum.com]

Comments? Experience? Opinion?

Thanks

some Soundgraph products can power up the comp: the IR remote sensor is connected to
- internal USB port
- motherboard
- power suply
in order to allow this feature

OK. I decided to go ahead with the Streamzap remote control. I also decided that I would purchase an X10 IR543 infrared controller and a power module and lighting module. Now I can truly turn off and on my HTPC using my Logitech remote. I had to adjust BIOS settings so that the PC would start up on power restore - not sure if every BIOS has that feature or not. So, Logitech sends X10 command to turn on power module which in turn starts up HTPC - albeit I have to wait 30 secs for it to boot up to show itunes -no logon required as just 1 user - then Logitech sends Streamzap commands to control the PC- after a fashion. On shutdown Logitech sends Streamzap shut down command and computer powers off - again takes about 20 secs then after 30 secs. it sends an X10 command to turn off power module. The bonus now is that I can dim the lighting in the room using the Logitech remote which is kinda neat.

This setup is not perfect- but what in life is, but it works for me. MY HTPC is about 4 years old 1GHZ AMD and the power supply doesn't shut the fans down on PC standby, so it is too loud for me when nothing else in the HT setup is running. Thus I had to turn PC off to stop fan noise and the only way I could see to do it was as described above.

I like that idea though I would take it one step further and develop an IR dog collar so that I could send an IR command to my dog, give her a little electro shock which after a few months of training she would remotely power on the PC for me:)
