Has anyone routed their HTPC through a HT receiver. I assume would be possible. I am in the first stages of building a HTPC/media server to store and play my DVD collection and currently have a decent system in place. I was thinking of using a HDMI video card and streaming it through the receiver in place of a sound card. I am DIY'er and looking for advice. Also if any one wants recomend build specs for components(motherboard, V card, processor, case ), that would be appreciated as well. So many choices and would like to get it right the first time. Thank you in advance for your expertise and replies.

It should work. Just make sure you get a video card with an actual audio chip in it. A lot of them rely on something else to produce the sound.

As for the CPU, you want something fairly fast. It is better to get a faster dual-core processor than a slower quad core for this application.

I use a AMD 785G chipset motherboard in my HTPC. It has everything on the motherboard. I added a low-end Phenom X2 and it works great. The only problem with it is that I have to use the optical out to get digital audio to my receiver since the HDMI port only supports 2 channel stereo.

I did this for years before I switched to SageTV, I have SageTV setup on the PC as a server only with a bunch of Tuners and other capture devices in it, I then use The SageTV $200 networked hardware HD media players for playback.

The Sage Hardware players connect over a wired network and can playback just about anything, they also use less than 10 watts each and make no noise.
