Is anyone aware of software or a product that can be programmed to receive input from a remote and translate it into a different remote's signal or into a set of macros.

I am building a media center and would like to be able to use one (maybe cheap universal) remote to control a set of functions (turn on TV, DVD player, set inputs, channel and initial volume) with a single button.

Since the media center will probably have connections to whole house A/V stuff (audio throughout the house, other A/V gear) I would like to set up a single "hub" to do the translation, macros and routing IR to devices.

I would like to have it accept multiple inputs from different places in the house, and have multiple outputs to control devices in different rooms.

This sounds like something the high-end home control folks might have, but I'm looking for alternatives.

Thanks!

Does anything like this exist?

I was using a HTPC remote along with another universal remote to do something similar to what you want to do. I switched to a Harmony 680 (and using Windows XP Media Center)... controls everything, and is a learning remote to boot. Excellent tech support as well. Check it out, there are coupons floating around, I got my 680 for 100 bucks shipped.

Pandemonium3-

I am pretty sure what you want to do is very possible. First, I would go over to HTPCnews.com. I think many people over there have done the very thing you want to do.

In fact, a while back, I researched the very same thing. I was going to start with a USB-IRT and a USB RF transceiver. Those two can recieve and send any IR or RF signal. Then, I was going to use a peice of software called Girder to integrate it with a PC based universal remote. I don't know why it wouldn't work with a regular home theater universal remote.

But, first I think you need to decide what software you are going to run on your media center. I currently use Media Center 2005 which as far as know will NOT do what you want it to do. MS software as usual is very limiting, but easy to set up and use. Do some research over at htpcnews to find out what others use. I tried a combination of Meedio and Sagetv running under XP Pro that was really cool and will do what you want. But, it took more tweaking than I was willing to put in.

Actually, I am currently trying to get all my remotes programmed into a URC-8910. Thats why I am here.

Let me know if you have any other questions
Crappy remote, HTPC w/meedio&sagetv, Yam RX-V1400 rec, digi cable, 32" Pana SDTV + 22" CRT, polk audio "custom hybrid" 7.1 loudspeaker setup.

Have a look at the IRTrans Translator: http://www.irtrans.com.

It is a translator that is able to convert one IR Code to another
and also supports macros.

i have done exactly what you want to do.....

my htpc can control

ir light dimmers (lutron)
receiver (yamaha)
television (mitsubishi)

i can essentially control anything that has a ir remote

you want to get a USB-UIRT (bought mine from pcalchemy) which is an usb controlled IR transceiver....you can control this with Girder (again google this for the link)

you can capture IR codes from your remote by blasting the USB-UIRT. Once the codes are captured, you can build macros that will send out IR signals from the USB-UIRT to do what ever you want. these commands can be automated to occur on any number of event triggers....slaved to programs, triggered by an signal from a different remorte, triggered by tie of day, etc....

this is what you want.

by the way, girder will also automate rs-232, x-10 any type of output signal your computer can generate, and your eqiop, emt can receive.
