iPad Introduces Couple to Home Control
By Lisa Montgomery
Arkansas family unleashes the power of their iPads to manage their home.

When you’re an owner of an iPad, consider yourself an ideal candidate for a home control system. Larry and Stacey Newcomb of Jonesboro, Ark., discovered this after a visit to a showroom of a local home systems installation firm.

“They came to our design center and we showed them what was possible,” says Ryan Heringer president of Sound Concepts. Initially, the Newcombs thought they’d only need a few flat-panel TVs for their new 7,500 square foot house, but after seeing the Elan g! control system in action, they decided their home deserved much more technology than that.

“By the time I told them they could turn off every light in the house from an iPhone or iPad, they didn’t want to live without it,” says Heringer of Elan’s g!Mobile app.

Today, the Newcombs use their iPads (as well as wall-mounted Elan touchpanels) to operate 156 dimmer switches, a 12-source audio distribution system, and 10 TVs which can access four satellite feeds, two Kaleidescape media servers, video from their iPods and a surveillance camera at the front door.
