Top 10 Blu-ray Releases of the WeekBy Arlen Schweiger
Non-3D Alice in Wonderland, War of the Worlds and a whole lotta Clint Eastwood are on tap in high-definition Blu-ray this week.We already had our fun spoiled with the news that Alice in Wonderland would not be coming to Blu-ray in 3D just yet, but as a visual feast it may still be pretty interesting to check out in the high-def format that hits stores today.
The latest weird Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration features Burton’s typically stunning video effects and color palette, which may have been the best part of his take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
For those of you who have a more traditional 16:9 screen setup and are looking for a movie to fill it without the black bars on top and bottom, Burton filmed Alice in such aspect ratio to fill your screen. The soundtrack is in DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1, giving you an extra channel of surround effects.
Another re-telling of a classic novel comes this week with Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. It’s a bit more action-packed to rock your theater, and also is presented in standard 16:9 aspect ratio. Spielberg may be fizzling a little of late, but the special effects in this one prove he still knows how to deliver a blockbuster, even if it’s Tom Cruise and not Harrison Ford in a starring role.
Here are our top 10 picks of the week.
Alice in WonderlandAlice returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter.
