3 Good Reasons To Stick With HD DVD

Although it’s quite possible the decision by Warner Brothers Entertainment to abandon HD DVD will wind up being one of the final shots in the high-definition disc war, there remain some very sound reasons to ally with the HD DVD camp.

Granted, when Warner in June joins forces with Sony, Disney, and Fox as exclusive Blu-ray Disc distributors, the BD arsenal will be pretty impressive. But HD DVD still has a couple of powerful weapons in Universal and Paramount/Dreamworks, and both companies recently restated their support of the format. That means anyone planning to add the high-def version of “American Gangster” to their home video library better not be too quick to give up on HD DVD.

According to a poll of some 1300 Electronichouse.com readers, (see the following articles: Top 10 Reasons to Buy HD DVD, Top 10 Reasons to Buy Blu-ray), 41-percent currently own or plan to buy an HD DVD player, compared to 36-percent who own or plan to buy a Blu-ray player. Twelve percent said they were waiting for the dust to settle before making a decision, and 11-percent own or plan to buy both formats.

This is (albeit unscientific) proof there are some HD DVD supporters out there. Here are three compelling arguments to join their side.

i think i can finally understand the frustration that is expressed from BD supporters against those who support HD-DVD.

IMO HD-DVD *IS* the inferior format. it seems to me anyone who owns both will tell you the same. so all HD-DVD supporters are doing is dragging this out so people who actually care about quality have to suffer watching select titles that are (generally speaking) sub par in comparison.

that is the dumbest article I have ever read?

Hardware Bargains
How is it a bargain when the reason you bought the machine (watch HD movies) is the one thing you can't do. If you want a door stop just buy one.

Exclusivity

actually it is a bit over 75% for BD if you go by studio size, on the other hand a full month has passed in the year and how many movies has Paramount or Universal released, how many have they announced?

Dual Personality

If someone is a real movie fan and has and uses multiple DVD players/rooms, then chances are they will or have already bought BD players for where it is important. On the other hand why would someone that can have better PQ and AQ try and put the movie in the room with the small crappy TV and no surround? It is funny that one of the top three reasons to stick with HD DVD is that you don’t have (or need) to use it :) if I wanted a DVD player or a DVD I would just buy them and save some money.

Anthony are you are an idiot!! Seriously get off the koolaid!! You are so blu blinded that you can't see anything else. The PQ on the blu-ray players is deplorable at best that is when they don't freeze up. So I guess you expect people to throw away all their regular DVD's. I have clients with THOUSANDS of DVD's. Blu-Ray only have what a little over 400 titles which is barely better then HD DVD. Did you know that you can get "blu exclusive" movies on HD DVD? Good thing there is no region coding on HD DVD.
Who says you can't put 61" plasmas up on cantilever mounts using toggle bolts? <---Thanks Ernie ;)

"PQ deplorable at best"? The PQ on properly mastered BD releases will be identical to a HD-DVD version, and potentially better due to greater capacity and higher bandwidth. A poorly mastered BD will look just as bad as a poorly mastered HD DVD.

"Freezing up"? After the first couple of firmware revisions to the PS3 I haven't had any problems... and true there have been some troublesome BD players (lower end Samsungs), but considering that the third-generation HD DVD players aren't exactly known for their rock solidness (and yes, I now own an HD-A35 too) this is a sort of a moot point.

"Throw away your DVDs"? Why would owning BD make you throw them away any more than owning HD DVD would?

Amazon currently lists 550 entries for HD DVD and 628 entries for BD. Note that both of those catalogues include a lot of "bad" entries such as discontinued titles, announced but never released titles, "would be nice to have" titles, and so forth, but it's still a comparison.

I meant the PQ when playing standard def DVD. I did some editing and must've deleted the part where I said about it being SD DVD's. Yes BD can technically have better PQ then HD DVD when they use a clean master and proper encoding. I'm dealing with the Sony, Samsung, and Sharp BD players on an almost daily basis right now due to the problems of them freezing up. Most of the problems are trying to play SD DVD's not BD titles. Granted I've sent two or three HDA3's back in the last two months, out of about 15 sold. I have a PS3 and yes until the latest firmware it was being troublesome but it's a gaming system so I can understand it having problems.

lol, I find the first part of your post extremely funny considerinbg how even the most ardent HD DVD fanboy would think the rest of your post is totaly deranged.

Funny how you talk about me drinking the cool aid but except for some deranged ramblings you could not point to one thing that I said that is not 100% factual.

I have clients with THOUSANDS of DVD's

so? I have thousands of DVDs. If it is actualy true, go see if they have several different versions of the same movie. Collectors byy definition are willing to spoend to get something better. I don't know of any collector that would not be willing to rebuy something just because it is better.

Yes, I know there are very few. I also know that many Paramount and Universal movies are available elsewhere on BD. I also know that many none US studios have been dropping HD DVD and that with it some of the titles that where available as imports won't be for long.
