We are doing more and more matrix based system. One system we are working on will have 5 or 6 cable boxes. There are 2 families and a grandparent in this big house.

STB 1 = Family Room
STB 2 = Living Room
STB 3 = Parents A
STB 4 = Parents B
STB 5 = Grandma

Plus other sourced, Bluray, AppleTV, iPod dock, whatever.

There is one other common zone that may have a dedicated box or may not.

My thought is to have both the Family Room and Living Room remotes have a standard default configuration with maybe STB 1 & 2 available. Then have a USER option in the top corner, where they could push to select who they are, maybe even enter a code, then the it would change to a main GUI for that User including their personal sources.

What do you think? Is there a better way? What have you done that you got good response for?

I havent done any user based stuff like you are describing. It would be really cool though. No more decisions about what sources to put on what remote. Just do user based pages that are selectable from a hidden menu or pass protected menu.

I usually try to do a Box per person in the house, with an extra for a guest. Then I give them the choices on one of the main screens, I just label the boxes as Mom, Dad, Johnny, Sue, Guest, etc. That way whoever picks up the remote in that room can watch whatever they want from their own box without having to dig through too many menus.

If you try to give every one their own page with their box plus the other equipment, you are going to end up with alot of extra pages.

If you have more than that, I have made a single Cable/DTV button that takes you to another page with the different boxes to choose from.
