Ifeel your pain my friend. I once backed up 80GB (back when 80GB was a big deal) to an external USB drive so that i could move the data to a new computer. Once i deleted the data from the original PC the USB drive failed! Bye bye data!

These days, I use a Windows Home Server to back up *all* my PCs every single day. Has come in handy a few times.

I haven't had a hard drive fail in quite a while - in fact the last one to go was an infamous "Death"star 75gb and ironically it only went because *I* fried the circuit board accidentally.

I recently had a vicious battle with a 2 TB Western Digital that quit on me.

Turned out to be a bad MBR, which I was able to re-write though DOS.

I thought I lost every digital file I ever owned.

Now I run multiple backups with RAID configurations. I will never go through that again. Also, I have started to use journaling on my HDD's, and I can honestly say that I feel slightly better knowing that feature is being used.

It's my monitor that's got an annoying bug . . .

monitor bug 1

monitor bug 2

Not entirely sure I can get rid of it - it's between the layers of the screen.

Get an IDE-USB adapter and connect it to another computer, so you can access the files like any other mass storage device.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

Clicking sounds is likely a physical failure. A recovery place might be able to salvage some of the stuff, but you'd REALLY need to want it.
