It's no secret that Canadians pay more for things than their neighbors to the south. However it's starting to get a bit stupid.

Avatar BD on Amazon.com: $19.99
Avatar BD on Amazon.ca: $34.99

$19.99 USD in CAD: $19.96. Seriously, we should be paying slightly less!

Is the additional money due to taxes of some sort? In Chicago a pack if cigarettes can cost $10. 1 mile outside of the city limits they are around $3.

Nope. $34.99 plus tax (another 13%). No import duties on movies.

When you have some free time lets discuss a border running operation. I could probably retire on the proceeds from Avatar alone! We can use the old prohibition routes!

Heh, conveniently some family was heading down to Niagara Falls today... picked it up at a Target, $19.99.

but why get it from amazon.ca, that is the worst price I have seen, they are never competitive which is why I never got anything from there.

at FS you could have gotten it for 26.99, and if you had an acceptable game then you coulkd get it for free (a guy I know got the list, went to gamestop or something bought the cheapest used game on the list which was under 15$ and used it to get Avatar free.)

at Zellers it was also 26.99 but they would give you a 10$ gift card.

Agreed that Amazon.ca's price was the worst, but it's at least directly comparable to Amazon.com (and usually their prices are slightly better than Future Shop's, at least on less popular stuff).

Still, $27 as the best sale price in Canada is still 35% more than the common US promotional price. And even the MSRP is $50 Canadian, $40 US, which still shows a 25% increase when the difference hasn't been that high in a long time.

Zellers was the best deal, but there's actually no Zellers close by to me, and you'd still have to find something else to buy on another trip (fine if you're a frequent Zellers shopper, but I haven't been to one for a decade).

The news keeps trying to tell us how good it is to have a Canadian dollar at parity, but historically we do not see proper representitive savings in the cost of imported goods (which is the ONLY REASON a high dollar would be worthwhile), and otherwise it severely hurts all exporters along with the tourism and film industries, as your products/services end up being significantly more expensive to everyone else.

I got a good deal. The boy bought the BD and I got to watch the added DVD for free.

Hope you did not take my post wrong, we do tend to get ripped off on movies and now with the dollar at par or above, it makes it even harder to swollow. I just found it odd that you used Avatar for the rant when you take everything into consideration it is one of the few where we did not get screwed on it.

As for ca vs comm. Whta I have found is that com tends to always be the lowest in the US (either matches or beats it) because they tend to match other sites. On the other hand, like I said before, the few titles that I did compare earlier on there was always someons that had it lower. That is why I hate the com vs ca comparisons, ca does not try to be competitive.

Zellers was the best deal, but there's actually no Zellers close by to me, and you'd still have to find something else to buy on another trip (fine if you're a frequent Zellers shopper, but I haven't been to one for a decade).

I don't know if it was, the reason I knew the Zellers and FS was that even though I love this movie I told myself I won't triple dip this movie since we know there will be an other release with extras and extended scenes and we know there will be a 3D version, both of which are much more interesting, but 27$ with a 10$ GC and in exchange of a game made it extremely enticing to the point where I almost cracked. But having received two packages , on Monday 5 movies I bought from BB some weeks earlier but where out of stock when they had 5$ titles and Thursday 10 movies from SIG which had a decent sale on some decent titles, I kept my cool and decided to wait. Plus my sister bought so for once if I want to see a movie I can borrow it from them.

The news keeps trying to tell us how good it is to have a Canadian dollar at parity, but historically we do not see proper representative savings in the cost of imported goods (which is the ONLY REASON a high dollar would be worthwhile), and otherwise it severely hurts all exporters along with the tourism and film industries, as your products/services end up being significantly more expensive to everyone else.

agree, like I said before, I just found this an odd choice of movie for the rant. Since in theory you could buy it here for less then amazon.com.

PS I don't know if you care or have looked but sometimes amazon.uk ends up being a better deal since they don't charge the insane shipping .com charges.

PPS don't know if you want, but if you do, I don't mind posting interesting deals I find, like when I bought the LOTR trilogy from FS for 18.99 , that one in itself paid for many times we get screwed on other titles :)

Oh, there's a lot of things price-wise to complain about up here. I'm not sure I'd treat the Zellars deal as really better than the US, since it's easier to pay a lower initial price than have to figure out what to do with a gift card after the fact. Companies love gift cards, first because it means you have to buy other items at possibly higher markups, but also because a good percentage of folks never end up using them.

I was really expecting Future Shop / Walmart / CostCo to step up with good prices on Avatar (there have been big-name movies that end up being cheaper than the US in the past - I think The Dark Knight ended up being a couple dollars cheaper at FS than Amazon.com), and they didn't really compete at all. I got all excited when I was initially comparing prices and saw Amazon at $20, but then I realized that the PC had auto-filled in .com instead of .ca. And was subsequently shocked at the .ca price, and disappointed at everyone else.

Sure, I don't mind deals. In fact with the way things are going these days, I need deals!

agree, but it was still 17$ vs 20$+8$ shipping plus that extra "let's piss off Canadian’s" fee. I buy movies every week, plus Zeller's has more then just movies so GC would not bother me.

ouch. That is what bugs m most why is .com so competitive while .ca sucks.

well don't know of anything now, the only deal I know of is that HMV is continuing their 5$ off on selected blus if you bring in a DVD.
