If your salary is $1m and it is changed to $70k, by any measure that is a $930k pay cut. Any moron knows that.
And this owner is not 'paying everybody $70k.' He raised the minimum salary to $70k. As in, other employees may be able to make more than $70k. Even the biz owner, who said he'd raise his own wage back up in a year or two after they figure it out. One thing to figure out is pay equity for the higher earners now that the bottom is higher.
It's a mistake to assume that pay inequality has been removed. It hasn't. Bingo!

On the oil thing: Warren Buffett said a couple of months ago, if you think very long term, sending fancy printed paper over to the Middle East in exchange for their oil, depleting their reserves, while keeping US oil in the ground (it's not going anywhere) is actually a real good deal!

It's a mistake to assume that pay inequality has been removed. It hasn't. Maybe so, but the article I read on this (before Bruce posted here) specifically stated that everyone was going to be at the same salary, not minimum will be $70,000. It could simply be have reported incorrectly, but I just went on what I read in that article.

I think that if the owner wants to give up a portion of his salary to raise the salary of lower paid workers is compenable and should make those workers very happy.
But, what about all the other workers who though they might make more than 70K resent that their pay is now similar to someone who has put in the extra hours in a more stressful and demanding job.
Years ago before starting my business I worked with a company that paired me with this one tech. Though he was 10 years older than me and had worked for the company for years he had no motivation. I was the lead tech and had to do all the talking to customers, do all the paperwork, drive the truck to every job while he slept between jobs. He did only what I told him to do.
Then one day when I found out that he was getting paid only $5 a week less I was I went ballistic.
Most people that are very successful work long hours and deal with stress. For that they expect to be rewarded. If not then I think that the workers who work harder and work between 50-60 hours a week are going to resent the other workers who just collect the check and don't care to work over 40 hours a week.

All I'm trying to point out is that this CEO clearly seems to be operating with a social concience (something many of you cannot understand) Something in stark contrrast to greed-driven asset -stripping CEO's like John Donahue who is leaving eBay with his $23,000,000.00 golden parachute.
Good night, beer & ganga time!
