A "universal" remote mostly just means IR codes, but these days there are phone and table apps for TiVo, Direct TV DVRs, etc. There are other apps for lights and appliances like Z-Wave, etc., but universality seems to have fallen off (I can control my TiVo from my phone, but have to pick up a different control for the volume, or at least switch to a different app). Is there any effort anywhere to standardize all this junk? Some sort of plugin based system for phone and tablet software that could let one seamless app control everything?
