So what kind of pc do you put in the rack?
What else do you do with the pc (if it is in the rack)
You can't make toast in a floppy disk drive.

I believe there is a Netgear NAS unit that can run the squeezecenter software natively so that a computer isn't required to be running.

Controlworks module:

    • Browsing or searching the SqueezeServer's music library by songs, artists, albums, or genres
    • Control playback, including play, pause, track previous and next as well as the ability to skip to specific locations within tracks
    • Shuffle, repeat and random controls
    • Playlist creation
    • QWERTY Search capability
    • Internet radio
    • Dynamic Graphic support for album art
    • The ability to access the external digital inputs when used with a Transporter [Not applicable for other models]
    • "My Apps"
      • Pandora
      • Rhapsody
      • Slacker
      • Last.FM
      • Napster
      • Media Fly
      • Sirius Internet Radio
    • Search support with Rhapsody, MediaFly, and Napster
    • Station creation for Pandora and Last.FM
    • Love and ban support for Pandora and Slacke

You ever try that netgear nas? Does it really allow you to bypass a pc? Is it just as good? Can I do similar with drobo?

Is the module from comtrolworks free?
If not can I pay once and use it on multiple systems?

Take a look a these guys. vortexbox.org. He sells a turn key Squeezebox server/player solution(non rackmount).

You could also build one and install it yourself. Micro PC's are cheap. I use a tiny little atom based computer(7” X 7” X 1.5") that is hidden behind a 1u shelf as a 2 source squeezeplayer/server.
