Hi,
I am working on a Crestron control project and I must choose the touch screen to use between a Crestron touch screen TSW-XXX and an iPad.
is there anything you can do with the TSW (apart from the included camera and the RAVA intercom capability) that you can't with an iPad? I am more concerned about the technical limitations (if any) of the iPad

Please share your experience and knowledge. Thanks

Sam

iPad will insist on iOS updates when they come around.

You can't wake the screen up on demand.

You can disable the pin-entry but have to place it in 'retail-mode' <- this is not the actual name, but drawing a blank->

Reliant on wifi (or a mess of dongles to add ethernet AND power) for connectivity.

You can ensure that a TSW panel will ALWAYS work as soon as the screen is touched or a button is pressed.

A TSW never needs to be charged, never has a weird issue with wifi, never gives odd pop ups about updates.

use the X60 panels and you will never have to worry. If integrating Sonos, they have built in Sonos App that updates automatically when new updates are available, and will be a lot less headaches later when the new crestron app becomes available and the current one is no longer compatible with the ipads they have (this is what is happening with crestron mobile and current iPads).
You can't fix stupid

"Platform Not Supported"

On site, btw, in case anyone has some hints...

EDIT: This is probably the oldest iPad deployment I've been a part of, so it's Mobile G. The app got updated to v2.00.66.00, I think, from v2.00.60.00, and it generated that message. I had to recompile the VT and re-upload and it's beck up and running.

You'll likely not have that problem with a dedicated panel!

The TSWx60 has a nice screen saver feature.

You can control wake and sleep... this is essential for doorbells, cameras, security, etc...

You can remote load... you can to the processors for iPads but some times it is better reliability to load directly to the iPads which you cannot do remotely (easily).

Side buttons...

Touch detection, audio (we use sounds for notifications and doorbells), monitoring, rebooting (we auto reset the panel every night to clear memory for camera streams, etc...).

touch panels have there advantages listed above, but iPads work well if done correctly.

If possible have dedicated iPads for control and have a separate iTunes account for control iPads. This way you can have access to do everything without having clients personal info. Also turn off all notifications for everything and sign out of iCloud. Use Launch Port sleeves and base stations for charging. Have iPad for each room so jumping between AP's is not an issue (iPad Mini, launch port sleeve and base station are approximately $700 per room)

Biggest draw backs: have to press home button twice to open (as long as Crestron app is always open), iOS updates, older iPads no longer support new iOS (but new iPads don't cost much more than replacement batteries for touch panels)

I usually use touch panels for in wall use, and iPads for wireless use. I have close to 100 iPads in the field for Crestron control and if done correctly they work well.

iPads work great but i swear everyone i pick up has at least 3 popups i have to clear before i can get to the Crestron app.

So far we have done exactly ZERO in-wall/on-wall iPad installs. If the application requires a wall panel we use a touch screen. iPads are used for roaming/moving around the house control.

We are moving back to Crestron in-wall panels after using iPad/iPort docks for a few years. See the reason stated above, plus the more than 1/2 dozen iOS updates since 11 came out is more than frustrating!!

As stated by others, Crestron TSW (and similar) panels are Native Crestron Devices and do not suffer from the vagaries of iPads. Moreover, they offer a few hard buttons, which are quite beneficial in day to day useage. Graphics are stellar as well.

Aside from the cost differences, I'd always go with a Crestron touchPanel given the budget.

I don't give my customers the option. If they want an iPad done I'll do it but they always get a TP period. Once you explain it to them, it's easy. Not a single client has ever complained about getting a TP.
