Crestron TPMc3x.....been available for awhile now, who's done some ?....What do u think ? good ?great? any issues?

Its a very sexy remote. Feels good in your hand. WI-FI receiver is very good. Touchscreen is bright and responsive.

I don't like the glossy finish. Maybe im the only one? Sure seems like manufacturers are allover the glossy plastic these days. Finger Print city. I have to walk around for an hour polishing TV's, remotes and source boxes when i leave a job now.

The touchscreen size is OK but i would be happier with another inch. The hard button on the right for page flipping helps though. You dont need Left/Right page arrows wasting screen space.

The hard buttons are very different from anything i have ever seen. They are like a dark metal finish. I assume its just coated plastic but they look really fancy :).

The docking station is very cool IMO. The battery cover is weird. It feels like it will fall right off but it doesnt. It slides off so easy that i wonder how long it would hold up under normal use. I guess i dont know what causes battery covers to fail. Is it because they are on tight and the clips get worn or broken? Then maybe the TPMX-3X battery cover wont fail over time. Who knows.

I cant comment on battery life yet. Fingers crossed! At least they have 'normal' batteries. What i mean is that you can access it by sliding the battery cover off vs the tps-6x that requires a technician to replace the battery. That wouldn't be so bad if the batteries lasted longer than 9 months.

I've had mine since October with 8-12 hours of use daily (mostly the wife). She loves it and I'm constantly having to tweak it as she comes up with new ideas.

I've not spent a lot of time on it but I can't get sideshow to work.

I agree that the glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet and I would prefer a nice matt. I love the screen and having come from a nevo q50, it's far superior. We've never had the battery cover slip off but I am grateful that it's removable. I didn't like having to pick up the remote for it to awaken and reconnect to the wireless just to adjust the volume, so I set the wireless radio to never sleep, just the screen, thus the battery life is about 36 hours.

Overall we love it.

Would you mind posting ibdoomed when/if the battery fails? Its hard for me to determine this sort of thing because i am installing them and not using them. I dont know how often the client is using it, how often the return it to the charging cradle etc.

Sure. Just for clarification, what is your definition of failure? No longer charging at all or significant loss of runtime?

I guess i would define it as... the point in which you decide its time to replace it. So if you cant make it at least half as long without recharging as you are now it would be time to replace it.

I'm curious and it's probably mentioned somewhere but what do you use? I'm imagining something wild and top of the line like an mx-6000 or 5000 or maybe a tsu9800? Depending on if you like the two handers or not. Or you've got some prototype that's a little suction cup you put on your temple to think control your system? =)

I love the wall-mount/coat-hook option for it. It's a perfect idea for people who ar always losing their remote/jacket.

Ha! My first universal remote was a pronto ts-1000. The screen broke. Then we had a client with a pronto ts-2000 that failed. I stole the screen from it and built the worlds only pronto ts-1000/2000 hybrid :). I still have it, i use it as an IR learner/tester.

My next remote was a URC MX-850. Quite possibly the best remote ever built. The hard buttons got dated, the transports for DVR's in particular... and with each new device i had to have more soft buttons. At one point a clients MX-700 failed and i gave them the 850 as a loaner because i was able to load their program to the 850. The client asked if they could buy the loaner and i said yes. I still regret that decision a little.

I had a URC MX-950. Very nice remote but my girlfriend dropped it a few times in front of me and i decided to sell it on ebay before it got broken,

I had a TPMC-10 and an RTI T2-C that i used for a while and sold on ebay.

Currently i am using a URC R6. I got it for $20 i think, with best buy reward certificates. Its a learning remote and all my gear has discrete commands. It has a nice set of hard buttons and i can control everything from it. I dont care if it gets dropped or chewed, lost or stolen.

I have been watching the TPMC-3X for a while and then i wanted the prodigy version and decided against it when i found out it wasnt wifi. I have thought about a TPMC-8X but its a few years old now and im hoping that apple or someone comes out with a nicer option. When i load my templates to the 8X they look good but not great. I would like something with better image quality/higher resolution at the same screen size. I think the 8X is 8.4 inches.

The TPMC-8X is the perfect panel size IMO. Its small enough to hold in your hands while watching TV and large enough to manage subsystems and AV sources. If they could increase the resolution and double the battery life (without the extended battery pack) i would probably get it. Im hoping that apples tablet rumors become reality at some point. This fake screenshot i found is what im hoping it looks like.



I cant make up my mind about what i want and since i see new toys at every job its really hard to just pick one and live with it. I would imagine that most CI's have a science experiment going on at home because we cant commit or because were constantly stealing our own gear for projects or family members or starting things and not finishing them :).

I think the 8x or any 2 handed touch panel horrible for video. Personally, I thnk your MX-850/ML600 is the best TV remote.

The 3x is close to the one way remotes. It has enough hard buttons that you only need the second hand for keyapd operaton. Since I'm a Guide and scroll type of guy the 3x works for me. It has been very responsive, it roams reasonably well, it has worked in a crowded Maimi RF enviorment.

I'd take a 3x any day over the 8x for TV. For AV/automation the 8x. But I like these panels wired and my wireless small, one handed devices. Good resoluton too, but you do need to think about your layout.

Best of both worlds would be a large wired panel and a TPMC-3X for channel surfing in each room.

What about the 6x? Personally I would take the AMX wireless 5.2" over the 8.4" any day.

I have used both. YMMV but my opinion is that once you are going to use a remote that requires two hands, you might as well use the one with more resolution. I just feel as thought the TPMC-8X gives so much more ability to create a beautiful GUI by using 800 x 600 instead opf 640 x 480. Someone is going to tell me I'm wrong amd also point out how all the hard buttons on the 6X effectively give you more screen real estate but I'm fully aware of that and only stating my *preference*. When I hand someone a 8X I am able to give them a pretty powerful whole house control GUI that I just don't have space to create on the 6X using our preferred GUI.

There is no doubt that the 6X is a bit better for channel surfing, but for that I'd actually go with the 3X. When budget allows the perfect combination is a big wired panel for full house control and a 3X for TV. BUT...the amazing thing about the 3X is that it can even work quite well for basic house control due to the 2-way feedback.
