I'm doing a cottage here that is all post and beam. The walls are all glass so there is absolutely nowhere to install inwall touchpanels. I've been thinking about using handhelds for each audio zone and possibly a TPS-6X for the main great room area. It's a small system consisting of 4 audio zones and a TV area with a 3.1 system. Is there a better solution that you can think of for control? Which handheld would you recommend for range and battery life? The ML-600 is out because I need 2 way.
Thanks, G

What's your experience with the range on the mlx-3's? Wait...they haven't been released yet, have they?

I'm doing Crestron on this one. Prodigy doesn't have Sirius, I dont believe.

You have not defined the GUI or number of sources. MLX-3 will work reasonably well as long as you are fine with scrolling list GUI.

You will have more room with a 6x but it's also a 2 handed remote. Are you thinking of roaming with these remotes?

I think the MLX-3 with iPad your best solution as long as the native iPad works or you have a processor with CF.

As for Sirius and Prodigy, you can purchase the ControlWorks Squeezebox module and put Sirius on to Prodigy--though it'll be a network stream and you'll still need a subscription.

Alan,

3 sources. AM/FM, CEN-IDOCV, Sirius Tuner. My only concern with handhelds is the lack of real estate for feedback.

No roaming; I would have a remote for each audio zone and one for the TV room.

Squeezebox will do iTunes, local AM/FM as well as Internet radio ( local's are internet ), Pandora, Rhapsody, Last FM and so on as well as Sirius. Add in your idocv and these sources can be seen as scrolling list sources

You could do this with Prodigy and Squeezebox plus a idocv. But if you're going with full Crestron the MLX-3 would work nicely.

Reception will depend on the number of devices in the system. Furhterest I've had a gateway is 30 ft. I suspect you could go further, particulary with additonal EX dimmers in the system.

What sort of real estate do you need for a list of presets, channels or stations that upon selection flips to a now playing page? For ipod, again a browse list and a now playing page? I'm not going to deny that cover art will be hard to read but I've always liked the sized screen.

iPad is also an option.

Alan,

The head end is going to be on the main floor but without any field experience with the Prodigy wireless expanders, I'm more apt to go Crestron because I can hardwire an EX gateway into each of the zones if needed. Awhile back I had some range issues with the mlx-2's and adding gateways locally solved the problems.

Have you used the Prodigy wireless expanders yet? The spec says up to 150 feet but......you know how that can go....

I have a couple Prodigy systems where the PMC2 is at the top of a 4' tall Snap metal rack, one is 20-30' away and the other is 30-40', through walls. The 20-30' has 90+ %. the further one has a dimmer in the room plus a dimmer in the kitchen about halfway between and the remote is nearly 95+%

MLX-3/PTX-3 both have excellent range. Will easily do 30-40 feet. Prodigy was made for systems like this. Crestron does offer a AM,FM,XM radio for Prodigy.
