I've been using two MX-700's for years. Suddenly when trying to upload I get an error message that reads:

"Error detected while communicating with your remote control"

"The com port is being used by another program. Please identify and exit the program."

This is a new PC and I have already tried using the USB with an adapter, but I still get the same message. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've ran into problems uploading old 700's into the new software data base before.

I wouldn't blame it on your usb adapter.
Every day is a good day.......some are just better than others!

Proud to say that my property is protected by a high speed wireless device!

Check your COM port settings in both the MX Editor and also in your Control Panel. Make sure the Editor is matching with your serial to USB adapter.

Thank you,
Damon DG

Is it a Belkin or Keyspan adapter?

Any brand but those aren't officially supported. I know Radio Shack adapters don't work...and I get a message similar to that when using them.

My Radio Shack Adapter works fine with the MX700 editor software running on WinXP Pro.

Any USB to serial adapter with driver software will create a COMx: port which should be usable by the MX700 software. If for some reason the USB to serial driver software creates a com port > COM9: (e.g. COM10:), the MX700 software will not be able to use the com port. In this case you go into the WinXP control panel and force the com port device name to COM1:->COM9:. Of course before you change the com port device name you should verify that there is no other active device which is using the com port name. Often there will be "phantom" COM ports left over from hotplugging other devices, which are not currently in use.

I'm sorry for being ignorant, but where exactly in the Control Panel would I check that? I have Windows XP Home BTW. Also I only tried the USB adapter when the original port came up with the same message. Thanks Damon DG.

Scott,

No problem. Go to: Control Panel...Performance and Maintenance...System...Hardware. "COM & LPT Ports" should be listed in there. Click the "+" next to it to expand your options, right click on your USB adapter and check the properties.

Thank you,
Damon DG
