I have been programming Universal remotes for 4 years.

This is the first time I have worked with the MSC-400.

I have a SR8001 Marantz with URC Female serial cable plugged into port 7.

Marantz serial port is 9600 8 none 1.

I added a serial device in Devices & Routing.

I loaded the serial Data base for the sr8001.

I uploaded the file to the MSC-400.

All I am trying to do is send a test command from the laptop. The light on the front of the MSC-400 lights but nothing happens, what I am doing wrong.

I am not trying to do anything with the remote yet, just send a serial test command from the laptop.

I tried a second MSC-400, still nothing but a light on the front.

Thanks for any help...

I would like to add that I have completed the quick start, fundamentals, advanced training for MSC-400 on the URC dealer site.

Thanks again

You need to make a custom cable. Check the pinouts of each device. I made a custom cable but I think a null modem adapter should work. Or a male cable with gender might work as well but I haven't tried it. If you don't get it to work, I'll send over the pinout details but I won't be able to do that until tomorrow.

I ran into similar problems a couple weeks ago with a Marantz projector being controlled with a MSC400. I had to switch the RX and TX wires on the cable.

Are you using the pre-made URC serial cables or are you making your own?

I just checked the pin outs of the Null Modem cable I bought at Fry's, it was not a Null modem, did not cross TX, RX. Pulled an old Null Modem cable out of my stored box of cables, it worked. Thanks for all the help. I guess the best advice is to make your own cable.
