You guys are right, the device is coded in to the macro itself, so a macro calling another macro is not necessary, and a macro should be a viable workaround for the lack of a shortcut.

Just not on my MX-850 which has limited macro capability ...

A macro calling a macro is a great way to program your MX-900 and up. I do this a lot, when a customer presses off from any device it will call the system off macro. This allows me to make a single macro for system off and call it from many places.

The problem with importing the macro to every off button is that when the customer adds a component I would have to go back to every off button and change each macro. My way allows me to add a single off command for the new component in the system off macro and it will be executed no matter where it is called from.

Why not use the ON/OFF punch through? Because I would like to keep the ON button as device power and the off as a system macro.

As Mike said a single-step macro is no different than a shortcut and it is as simple as creating a shortcut.

Yes, I hope URC is listening ... when the MX900 was first
released I provided feedback re: why removing shortcuts
was not a good idea, but all I heard back was "copy &
paste replaces it." :(

copy and paste does not replace a shortcut, a single step macro does. As stated earlier copying and pasting will not retain your IR/RF and routing.

Using a single step macro is the same as a shortcut.
Importing or copy/pasting a macro achieves the same thing.
Take a look at this
thread
. Copy/pasting a single command from one device
to another causes the command to be fired under the "rules"
of the device it's now a part of.

I updated an MX900 today using this technique (i.e., OFF button on DVD page called the SYSTEM OFF macro, rather than copying/pasting the SYS-OFF macro to DVD, as I was doing previously), and it works great ... a good workaround for the lack of shortcut support for this function - thanks to all the folks that suggested it, this hadn't occurred to me!

However, it's still slightly less efficient (when programming) than using a shortcut, though I suppose I'll get used to that; I still think, though, that it's worthwhile to bring back shortcuts - this method doesn't handle the issue with referencing other device's commands (using IR, e.g., display) on an RF-configured device page. Again, the example is a hidden DVD player configured for RF, and a DISPLAY configured for IR ... and wanting to have PIC MODE and ASPECT RATIO control from the DVD page.

I'm with you on that one. As soon as that came out, I emailed Eric and Jeff to have them separate the ON and OFF punch throughs.

I guess they forgot about it. Maybe they will remember now?

The ON and OFF punch throughs will be the most exciting new feature that no one will use.

A single step macro on the DVD page that has the PIC MODE or ASPECT RATIO from the display device will use that command via IR, same as a shortcut would. The only issue that you might run into with a single step macro is if it's a button that you would need to hold down.

The only difference between a one step macro and the old shortcut, was that doing a shortcut, you had the drop-down menu to choose device, and then command. It still basically works the same way, except now you're just navigating the remote to find the button you want.

This is on the slate to be corrected, a single step macro is supposed to repeat if it is a repeating command and you hold the button. I occasionally need to put volume commands for another room on a page for some reason or another so this will be a welcome fix.

I have benn thinking this same thing for a while now. I liked the ability to do shortcuts. When I did some of my first MX900 / 950's I called tech support on this one and they had no clue what I was talking about when I said "shortcut". In the 850 Editor it's the edit label butons box. I had in stuck in my head as shorcut though. Where have I heard that term "shortcut" before?? The guy from tech said that it would be available soon on 900's and above but I dont see that happening. I've just learned to live with it. The main reason I needed it was programming for and Elan VSE electronic volume control's vol +/- onto a Device. Can't do that w/ a macro.
