I went through the pain so that you don't have to :-)

I created a specific blog entry because my previous instructions were hard to follow. I hope this actually helps.

If this works, you are going to have some happy campers shouting some joy your way, my friend!

Sad note, the above solution does not work for the MX-950

FYI - If you want to Live Update URC Editor Software with Vista.
a. Go to Control Panel (Must log on using an Admin Account)
b. Select User Account
c. Turn off the UAC feature, restart and you can update as usual.

(UAC - annoying feature that ask to "Cancel" or "Allow" everything you try to do on Vista)

You can also right click on the MX-950 Editor shortcut and select run as administrator. Live update works this way as well.

I got this to work also but couldn't get the live update feature to work until I came into this thread again. Thanks for the great tips!

I think someone from URC needs to call or email Adrian (adirob). Sounds like at the very least, he's figured out what they need to do in their software Update for Vista. Should be worth at least a remote of his choice, perhaps a MSC400 as well.

I haven't been able to get this to work on the 950 with Vista Home Premium.

I have used an Administrator account, turned off URC, re-booted the machine and am still getting the unable to connect whenever I try to update.

I also find no Mobile Device selection when I go into Device Manager.

I can still use my old XP machine to update the remote, but since the XP takes close to 15 minutes to boot it would be nice to get this working under Vista.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. However, I'm using the 64-bit version of Vista, so I expect that's why.

Ha! Yes, I would love a new remote control - the battery on my MX-3000 is starting to wain and i am loathe to shell out for a new one given that I really havent enjoyed owning it at all... I am fortunately in technology (software) so i was not shy to get my hands dirty but the pain of working through issues with this remote left me soar mouthed. But i would love a change to be re-enamoured with the new URC products... :-)

Glad this post actually helped people...

Here you people. This is the solution, without doing all the goofy stuff.

Plug remote in

Link to windows device center 6: (VISTA got rid of Activesync so you need to have windows device center 6 installed)

[Link: microsoft.com]

Make sure remote stays AWAKE throughout the duration of the steps

-Then plug in the mx-980 (windows will try to automatically locate the drivers)

-Right click on “Computer” and select “Manage”

-Open Device Manager, select the Mobile Device – URC USB Sync MX

-Right click and select “Update Driver”

-Select Browse my computer for driver…

-In the Wizard, Select “pick from a list of devices”

-In the list, select (Mobile Devices)

-UNCHECK “show compatible hardware”

-Select Microsoft “Microsoft USB Sync”

After these steps it may require you to unplug and plug the unit in a few times.
