Hi, I apparently used this forum years ago when I originally set up my HT system, Thank you for still being here.

I have an extremely well used MX-980 with a (Play) button that has failed to participate. Myself (and my Tech-Challenged wife) rely on this remote daily so I am reluctant to monkey with it without some guidance...

MX-980s are inexpensive on ebay... and money is tight. I have started looking for a local HT shop that could help but the 2 I've called so far say they no longer have the ability to program this remote..??

I likely do still have the software on CD somewhere but don't have a windoze box to run it on and I am aware of the !!don't upgrade!! thread but I have other questions:
-- If I had another MX-980 Could I possibly disassemble the 2 remotes and make a good one by swapping parts around, without having to re-flash the program??
-- I have never disassembled this remote. Are the button switches and program memory chip all on the same board? or could I mix and match to solve the above problem?
-- Is there a chance of fixing this by disassemble/clean/repair the existing remote?

Thank you all for any help you can give, There is nothing better than an active forum community!

First I would see if someone would let me use their Windows computer and install your CCP on it.

Then I would try to procure a used 980 in good condition, use the older version of CCP to download the programming of your current remote then upload that same programming to your just procured remote.

I have used a product called Keypad-fix to repair worn out remote control buttons, available on Amazon, easy to use.

It is a liquid that will fix the carbon pad that makes contact with the copper contacts on the circuit board.

Sometimes all you need to do is just clean the circuit board where the button is making contact to get rid of the crap that builds up, I use a paper towel to buff the area and remove the build up.

Thank you for the reply.

I may be able to get that to work.

Thank you for the reply, This sounds very promising. I read some reviews on the product.

I purchased a similar product from Ben Jordan P1 Repair. You get a bunch of internal replacement buttons that are placed over the original on the circuit board. Might be worth looking into but it didn't help mine. I went with the MX-990 and never looked back. Nice not having to deal with Windows Mobile to download.

MX-980 are going for pennies on eBay lately.
Just buy a used one for like $20 and keep your old one as a spare or for another room.
