Just got this media box (MiBox by Xiaomi):  [Link: mi.com]

Cannot find any codes- I looked under webTV and Aux but did not find the manufacturer or the device.
The original remote is BT but the device supposedly supports IR commands too.
However, I cannot see how to use the learning function of the MX780 if the original remote sends BT signal and not IR.

I appreciate any input/help.

Look for the hex codes in this thread at jp1 forum:

[Link: hifi-remote.com]

Use the universal browser to load them into the mx-780.

I'm just evaluating a MiBox. One of the requirements was ability to use our MX-500 remotes. The GE UltraPro Universal Remote - 4 Device is made by Jasco, and costs less than $10 at Walmart and elsewhere. Jasco's site said it supported Xiaomi streaming devices. So I bought one, along with the MiBox. Programmed-in the necessary code, "1654", and...

nothing :(

Then I thought to try it again--thinking maybe I'd fumble-fingered something. Went through the programming process again, got ready to try it, stopped, gazed at the remote for a moment, then thought "Hmmm... I never selected the device, after programming, the first time." Hit the "aux" device select, then the power button, and...

Voilą! It worked! :)

So far all I've tested is power on/off, the five "joystick" buttons, "back" and "menu/home" (they do the same thing, looks like).

(I have not seen this solution reported anywhere else, and, believe me: I looked.)

Hmmm... This remote has a "*" button.  I wonder if it'll give me "*" on the Roku box?

Here's a link to the product on Walmart's site: [Link: walmart.com]

ETA...

Hmmm... Problem. Neither of my MX-500s will learn any of the MiBox' IR commands other than "power."  The MX-500s display the "ready" and "good" status', as they should, but what they send doesn't have any effect on the MiBox. Tried varying the distance between the remotes. Tried long and short presses. Tried different buttons on the MX-500. No go.

This is a first, for me.  Never had my MX-500 fail to learn.

So it's looking like the MiBox may be a non-starter for my use.  Too bad.  It was looking so promising there for a bit :(

ETA2...

Apparently this is not a new problem with MX-500s and newer hardware. There's a variety of reasons for it, but it boils-down to some newer devices using IR protocols the MX-500 knows not. Newer URC devices may work.

I've just completed the "what remote to replace MX-500s with" routine and found nothing acceptable. So I'm either going to live with having to have two remotes for wherever I use a MiBox or find a different streaming solution.

Hi Edmund,
Thanks a lot for your quick reply.

I am not a professional installer- could you possibly describe the procedure in details?

I have a feeling that I am not the only amateur using a URC remote so maybe someone else would benefit from this info.

Thanks again.

Hi SEMIJim,

If I understood you right, the jasco remote has to be manually programed to control MiBox, and, after that is done, it can be used as a source of IR commands to learn from?

Thanks a lot

That's what I thought.  See my "edited to add" update of just a few minutes ago.

That's three strikes against the MiBox, so it looks like it may be going back to the store.  Too bad.

Btw: If you still want to try it: The GE/Jasco remote is inexpensive: Only $9 at the local Walmart.

ETA: And, if that fails, the situation may be salvageable with a FLIRC: [Link: howtogeek.com]

I've posted a question about the MX-500, MiBox and Flirc over in their forums.

SEMIJim,

Does the Jasco remote operates the MiBox?
If it does then the problem may be with the MX500.

@semijim

The codes you are trying to learn may be toggle bit codes.  I'm not sure if the MX500 has the "learn-2" option, but the MX780 does.  This is what you use to learn toggle bit codes.  So m1964 may have a chance at making this work if he tries learning the codes with the mx780 remote.

Yes, the GE/Jasco IR remote operates the MiBox just fine.

Not certain what "toggle bit" codes are, but, whatever they are, sounds like that may well be it.

Whenever I've seen "toggle" codes mentioned, I always took that to mean codes that toggled a state on the device, such as power on/off. Maybe not?

some ir remotes send alternating codes for the same command.  it is nearly impossible to learn these commands.  you will find that if you do capture the command, it only works every other time you press the button.

here is a good explanation of them:  [Link: nex6factory.com]

I re-tested teaching my MX-500 from the GE/Jasco remote. Nope. Nada. No matter how many key-presses. Meanwhile a user on Flirc forums showed up in a thread of mine in the JP1 forums and says

The protocol doesn't have toggle bit. It encodes two bits per burst-gap pair but this shouldn't be a problem for a learning remote.

The saga continues :)

Well, m1964, I'm afraid I'll be of no further help to you. The OTA tuners I was going to use failed to suit my needs and nothing else on the market was suitable, so I'm abandoning the project, which means the MiBox is going back to the store.

Good luck with your project!

You can try "2 times" learning with the software.

Thank you,
for now I am using the Roku.

The project got brought back from the dead. Turned out what I had thought to be poor tuner performance was something awry with the offending station.

Got the Flirc app running on my Linux box this morning.  Plugged in the Flirc, fired-up the app.  The app saw the Flirc and notified me of an available firmware update.  Installed it.

Programmed the MX-500 from a canned NEC TV profile (first one I tried that produced signals for all the joystick buttons: TV 130).  Taught the Flirc from it.  Plugged the Flirc into the MiBox.  Worked!

Taught the MX-500 the MiBox' power on/off from the inexpensive GE/Jasco remote.  Done!

Only MiBox button I'm missing I would like to have is the "Home" button.  Wouldn't hurt to have the MiBox' volume up/down buttons, as well.

Btw, m1964: You can teach the MX-500 the Roku box from that inexpensive GE/Jasco remote, including the elusive "*" button that, everywhere else on the 'net, they say can't be taught/learned to/on an IR remote :)

ETA: Got the "Home" button by switching to the Fire TV template and teaching the MX-500's "Menu" button to "Home" on the Flirc. Life is good :)

ETA2: Had a problem with the Flirc where it was registering double-key-presses and other anomalies. Went into File -> Advanced Settings with the Flirc configuration tool and turned off all the built-in profiles.  Problem solved.
