For those of you, who like me are new to this, and do not program these remotes often, here's an overview guide I wrote for my own reference.

MX 980 Programming Guide Overview
Supplemental

Purpose: The purpose of this guide is to supplement the MX980 programming guide. This guide provides more of the “big picture” for programming an activity based remote via the Complete Control Programming (CCP) software tool. The aim of this guide is to accelerate one’s learning of how to program an activity based remote.

Concept: The MX980 remote is based on two main hard key selections, one for Watch activities, and one for Listen activities. The concept is simple enough, one identifies a list of Watch activities and a list of Listen activities. The user defines his own choice of activities for each of the two lists and loads them into the appropriate Watch and Listen pages via the programming tool. Each activity selection is then linked to Devices to both initialize and control them. To achieve this one selects and loads in a command set for each of ones' Devices (or remotes) and then programs the initialization steps via the CCP macro programming editor.

Programming the MX980: Here’s a list of the basic steps involved in programming the MX980:

1.Define watch and listen activities and load them into their respective Watch and Listen pages. This is done under Program → Create and Name Devices.

2.Load devices, where each device is a remote equivalent. Load the devices the Watch activities will use, and load the devices the Listen activities will use. Select Device, Theme and Button layout. This is done under Program → Create and Edit Layouts.

3.Select “Add Pages” when loading in a device. Otherwise no pages or IR code set will be saved.

4.Use selections on next page to load the devices IR command set. Under IR data.

5.Program macros as needed. Select button to program. Hit record in macro editor, select commands to be programmed in, typically end with jump command, stop recording. See manual.

Notes and Hints:

Edit button text via properties dialog.

Simulator does as it names implies, it will run as a simulator when buttons are selected.

Remote Connectivity: If unable to connect via Windows 10: first ensure Windows Mobile Device Center is installed. Vista version is acceptable. Open Device Manager, either connect or wake remote (MX980). Locate device, probably found as Unknown device under Other devices. Update Driver window opens: Select Browse my computer for driver software → Let me pick…→ Show All Devices → Next → select Manufacturer Microsoft → Select Microsoft USB Sync → Warning Appears, wake remote then select Yes. Device should now be synced.
