I have a 450 but found an awesome deal ($80) on a MX-980 with the RF extenders and repeaters etc. with cradle.

Is it an upgrade, and in what ways? I was told by someone who has both that he preferred his 450 but gave me no details.

Thanks!

It is a huge upgrade in graphics, programming, sounds, rechargeable battery and dock, more buttons, bigger screen, etc.

The only things I can think of that may be advantages to the 450 are programming on remote and doesn't need software, easier to learn and possibly some might prefer it ergonomically.

My guess is who ever had it found the programming difficult compared to the 450. It is not really more difficult but with added functions in programming there is more complexity and will have a longer learning curve to get proficient in the software and learn all the more you can do with it. However, once you understand the software it can be much quicker to program unless you do a lot of custom graphics and sounds.

I find the software based remotes MUCH easier to program. The reason a 450 might be easier to learn on is simply that it is more basic. But feature for feature, the software will still be easier to program.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'd prefer software programming. I am pretty good at coding in computer languages, so handling advanced remote programming shouldn't be an issue.

I just read the sticky at the top warning about URC software availability to end users. Big red flag. Am I likely to be stuck with a preprogrammed used 980 without being able to reprogram myself? Or is it likely that I'd be able to get my hands on the software on my own?

What is the name of the official URC software that the 980 relies on? Thanks.

Complete Control Program is the name of the program that is why you are in the Complete Control section of the forum:-) The program is used for many models of their remotes.

Kidding aside. URC will not give out the software to end users only dealers. URC leaves it up to the dealers if they would like to give a copy of the programming software to their customers. I would make sure whoever you are getting the remote from gives you the software. Many dealers would be reluctant to give out the software.
