Can the MX-850 programming software be used with a serial-to-USB adapter? I bought a new laptop with no serial ports, so before I buy an adapter I'm curious if anyone has tried the software using a USB connection.

Yes. The keyspan/tripplite 19HS is often the preferred model to use.
