I've got a whole-house A/V system that was professionally installed in 2008. Elan controllers and URC remotes to 8 rooms via Cat 5 and driving component video. The URC remotes are beginning to go (keypad issues). I've located a keypad replacement source on Ebay (at $40 per keypad set!), but thinking it might be time to replace the remotes. I have and can use the MX-900 Editor, so perhaps something compatible from the URC line but with a little better life to the remotes? Or, should I just migrate to something completely different?
I have found that the female connector that received the data cable wears out on the mx-850. The male plug that is used on the 850 data cable is a common mini stereo type plug but it is available in both 3mm diameter and 1/8" diameter with 1/8" being slightly larger than 3mm. If you can find a cable with a 1/8" plug it may work in a worn remote where a 3mm plug has failed. A little electronic parts cleaner could also help.
If you have a copy of ccp software and know how to program the remotes then I would recommend the mx-880. I bought a few remotes on Ebay and have been playing with the 850, 880 and 980 remotes and the 880 is my personal favorite.
The 980 lost points with me due to the short battery life and the fact that I just like the feel of the 880 better in my hand. I think that the 980 has some automation functions that the 880 doesn't have but I have no use for them. The 980 also has a larger screen but that didn't impress me that much. The 880 just ended up being the one that I pick up most.
If you're adventurous and patient you can pick up these remotes on ebay for under $50. Because of their complexity these devices occasionally end up in the hands of an Ebayer who buys at flea markets or estate sale and has no idea of how to make it work and they let it go for a song.
