I'm beginning the long upgrade path for an older system, first the remote. I'm considering using a MRX-8 and a TRC-1080. (Customer wants a real remote, not a phone/pad) My issue is that there is no network connection in the cabinet and no practical options for pulling wires.

I'm looking for ideas.

Power line is one possibility, but the cabinet outlet will be shared with a big APC A/V power distribution box. I expect that the APC will shunt the EoP carrier.

A WiFi extender might be an option. Generally, I hate those things. Does someone know of one that works in this context? (It could be ugly, there's plenty of room to bury it in the cabinet.)

Sonos would be perfect for this, but that's not in the cards for this system at this time. (Although, an interesting thought would be to use a couple of BRIDGE's. They are inexpensive on eBay)

The mrx8 doesnt need internet access. Just put a router and access point over by the cabinet and connect it to the mrx8.

That's true, an old wireless router could be recycled. I don't need much range for the core function (currently the MRX-8 will really be just an IR repeater, but with headroom for future upgrades). I could provide an interesting whole house function (that they are not aware of) simply by adding a device to the TRC-1080 -- if its operating range is good enough. The condo is dense, old world construction, multiple access points cover the space nicely, hence my thought of getting the MRX-8 on the network.

By the way, is the TRC-1080's "pickup" function tied to removal from the charging cradle or is there an inertial sensor?

1080 has a pickup sensor, its not tied to the dock. Just pick it up or shake it and it will wake up, unless it doesn't wake up in which case it needs a battery pull.

i don't suggest using an old wireless router, even a simple total control system needs a decent network.  a ubiquiti router and wap would be fine and not break the bank.

Power APN will do both nicely.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.
