Hi. Longtime lurker. I'm considering replacing my 10-plus-year-old MX 700. It came bundled with my Parasound controller and the (audio) shop did not have a clue how to program it, but did give me the software so I learned how to do it myself. Programmed numerous set top boxes, DVD players, CD players, TVs, etc. over the years and I really love this remote. It's perfect for what I need it for and am used to it's simplicity and ease of use and fairly ease of programming. It's been rock solid and I could always find configs, hex, or simply learn codes I couldn't find, and the 850 looks like a logical step up. My 700 is starting to show it's age, and with a recent TV provider change and the accompanying Pace IPH 8010 set top box, I'm running into the toggle bit issue. I guess I could wait till this box is more in widespread use then find hex codes someone posts to do it, but I think the contacts are starting to wear so probably a good time to just replace it.

Anyway, am I right in what I've read that 850 will correctly learn this protocol? Also, this Complete Control/Total Control/Consumer distinction of this brand and who I can buy from confuses me. If I buy from Amazon, from seller "UNIVERSAL REMOTE" I assume I am buying directly from UR, yes? And I will be able to download the software from their site? Or do I need to find a dealer and go that way? And, are there any dealers here if I have to do that? I just need the remote and the software. Don't really need any professional services.

Thanks,
RJ

Right in the owners manual it states on page 2

"Only a professional custom installation company has the
requisite experience and training to quickly and effectively
customize a remote control for true automated operation."

You can only download the software if you're a registered URC dealer. You'll have to find a dealer willing to give you a copy of the software when buying the remote.

URC does not allow internet sales with pricing below MAP on the professional line of remotes. Even if you can score a good deal on a remote, just know that your warranty will not be honored. The person selling the remotes online is trying to mislead you by naming themselves "UNIVERSAL REMOTE" in the hope you will think it is the remote manufacturer, when indeed is not.

If you want to buy someone with zero integrity, that is your personal choice. But I can tell you from experience that I get calls all the time from unfortunate clients who purchased a remote at one of these online discount vendors and has an issue that can't be rectified without authorized dealer intervention.

I have no problem buying from an authorized dealer, I got my first one from one. That's not what I'm implying. I'd like to know if that dealer has to program the remote for me and any time I need to make any little change, I need to go back to that dealer? Or does it just depend who I'm dealing with?

I went from the MX700 to the MX850, and you can use your existing software and the file from your MX700 directly into the MX850.

The only difference apart from colour is the MX850 has RF.

There is also a clone of the MX850 software available free.

If the MX700 will not learn a code I doubt the MX850 will.

Some authorized dealers will provide the software, some will not. You have to ask. URC has made it clear that it is up to the dealer to decide if they want to provide the users with the software or not. You just need to be sure it is an authorized dealer. There are versions of the software out there that work, but will not update. With an authorized dealer you are sure you get the real software.

There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

I believe the software posted here does not update. It is not a full feature program if you want new devices.

I tried my 700 software with my 850. It did not recognize the 850 when I did a check for firmware version. It might have been my setup, but the same setup works fine with my 850 software. I would check to be sure if the 700 software works with an 850, especially a new 850. It might have worked with the original version, but, again, I would check if it works with a new version 850.

There are 850s with URC software available on eBay, but, as always, you need to be careful that the software is the real updateable version.

The best route is a new 850 with software from an authorized dealer.

You better get one quick. URC announced the MX-850 was discontinued a couple weeks ago, so they are not selling any more to dealers. Maybe you can find one at a deal if they are looking to unload it.

Thanks all for the info here and the offline folks who emailed me. I decided to get a little more current and ordered a 780.

The 850 and 780 editors are somewhat different, but learning CCP is not that hard. The one think that bit me when I first did a 780 is the difference in linking. With the 850 a link links to the code. You can move the code from one button to another and the link also changes. With the 780, the link is to a particular button. So, if you move the linked to code button to another position, the link no longer works. That means the best way to avoid problem is to create new devices for all the original codes and then create devices for the user to see and link everything in them to the original devices. That way you are never tempted to move an original code for convenience, since the user never sees the original devices.

Hope that makes sense. Just remember, never move a button that has a link to it. The link will no longer function.

Good luck.

Were you ever able to work around the toggle bit issue with the Pace IPH 8010?

Huh. Where was this announced? Their web site doesn't show it as discontinued. (But this would explain why the software hasn't been updated since 2015...)

The MX-1200 was discontinued too. No announcement that I'm aware of either. Yet, there it is on the web site as of today!

It would be nice if dealers who are on the e-mail list are given important dates, other than training sessions, like discontinuation dates, EOL for support of products and editors, etc.

I'm not seeing that on the public web site. Are you looking at the dealer portal? (If so, is it showing the MX-850 as discontinued as well?)
