I know I can get the original programming cable and then the serial to usb since I don't have a serial port, but will this usb to 3.5mm cord work?

No. That's simply a pin converter for a native USB device that happens to use a 3.5mm jack.

You need a USB-to-serial adapter, and then a serial-to-3.5mm cable with the right pinout.

Thanks. I will go ahead and buy those then. Another problem is that I can't findthe MX-850 editor software. I looked all around the files section and don't see the mxeditor only manuals.

Was just on the URC dealer site and the 850 software is there.

Sadly, they don't offer the download to consumers. (Even for an old remote like this!)

However, you can use this: [Link: files.remotecentral.com]

That's basically an MX-850 that was OEM'd to another company.

Thanks Daniel. I managed to find this website that was made by someone who uploaded OEM software from the early MX remotes.

Now should I use the RM820 editor or the original 2006 software?

Newer software will have a newer code database.

I agree. Why not release it so consumers with this obsolete remote can at least program it.

I am now having problems. I got the usb to serial and the correct programming cable but the remote just won't connect to the RM820 Editor. On the MX 850 Editor I can only get it to say "Fail! 1" on the remote where the page number is.

I cannot update the software because the mx850 editor doesn't have that option and the RM820Editor says its already up to date.

I always make sure its using the correct COM port

Welcome to the world of URC.

So do you know if its just that I don't have the updated software? On the RM820 I click live update and it tells me that I have the updated version.

It's an issue all the time. If you look through this forum you'll find all kinds of people having issues with URC remotes and connecting. I've never worked with the 850 so unfortunately, I can't be of much help to you. Hopefully somebody here has and can offer some tips.

Not all USB to serial adaptors work, see here.

Thanks. I figured that so I ordered a Trendnet serial to usb. I was using a prolific one before. I will update when that arrives on Friday.
