The Samsung JS 8500 model televisions do not have a regular remote. It comes with what they call "Smart Remote Control" which has no numeric pad. I don't even think it's an IR remote but only RF/Bluetooth? Does anybody know if there is a set of kinds that can work these model remotes with a URC remote control? I'm using the MX-450 universal remote. I'm paralyzed from the neck down so I use this one remote to operate everything. The Samsung remote has some type of pointer similar to a Wii remote from what I understand. I would really like to get this television but if I cannot fully operated with my URC remote and I'm out of luck. Currently I operate a five-year-old Samsung UN40C7000 television with my URC universal remote. Any information is greatly appreciated.

I haven't used that exact model of Samsung but have used others that come with the same remote and haven't had any issues controlling it. The IR codes for it should be in the URC library.

Chances are that the new tv will respond to the same codes. Some newer Samsung TVs require a firmware update for all codes to work.

You can update your mx-450 by using the archive software here [Link: universalremote.com]

Generally you can update your codes without deleting your current programming. And allows you to back up the current programming as well. I haven't had too much trouble finding codes that work for atleast the basics for those types of TVs.

Thanks for your input guys. The archive software is up-to-date. I also use the URC TX-1000 remotes (which I used years ago) software so that I can see which models the codes are for and the buttons that the codes have access to. Both of the software's code databases are up-to-date. As of yet none of the Samsung JS or JU models are listed. I was just hoping someone had given it a try for these models because I don't want to buy the television (a major purchase like this) and get it here and then not be able to work all the functions of the television because the codes aren't available. There is just no way I can use the televisions included remote due to my paralysis.

Samsung has a model JS7000 which I do believe has all the same software and controls as the JS8500 but it comes with a standard remote. I could possibly by the remote from Samsungparts website for $22 that comes with the JS7000 and program it into the MX–450 remote.

kgossen: Do you happen to know or remember the code set that you used for the televisions that included the same remote? Or was the TV model included in the database and if so what the television model was/is?

Can you take your remote to a best buy (or other store) and try it with a demo model? Or call Samsung support. You may be able to buy a simple remote (my LG had a basic remote you could buy), or just ask if the codes are the same as other Samsungs.

@Shallowearth

Thank you for the suggestion but unfortunately I have no wheelchair equipped van and being paralyzed from the neck down prone to dizzy spells does not allow me the comfort of riding in a car without getting dizzy and passing out. As you stated though, there is a possibility of buying a simple (standard) remote from the Samsung parts website that comes with a very similar model one step below the model I'm looking at. I mentioned this in my previous post.

Sounds like your best bet would be to either call Samsung support and ask about the remote compatibilities and if there is a basic remote you can order. Or call an electronics store and have them do the research for you on support ( which I am betting they would be happy to do). Might as well ensure you are getting the right thing and what you want.

I actually already had chatted with Samsung support on their website. The CSR actually gave me the part/model number for the remote that comes with the JS7000. The only difference observable between the JS7000 and the JS8500 is the JS8500 includes better panel 4K performance, mini connect box and 3D. So I'm pretty sure the remote will work the 8500. I ordered the remote yesterday. I found a code in the URC software with button labels that match the 7000 remotes (minus 3 buttons) which I'm thinking should work. I will have the 7000 remote as a backup just in case. The code I found is #656.

I haven't updated a 450 remote in a long time, so I don't know for sure, but for all other URC remotes I use code set 656 on all Samsungs.

@tomciara,

Thank you for that information. Yes, code #656 is the one that looks to have the closest fit to me. I went ahead and ordered the remote for the model TV one step down that comes with a standard remote just in case. :))

Did the remote from the model one step down work with the JS8500? I'm wondering what to use now as my new universal remote that can control this set along with my other components (receiver, TiVo). If the remote from the set "one step down" can send learnable signals to my current universal remote, that would at least be a start. Thanks.

Sorry but I haven't gotten my television yet. It will probably be anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks before I get around to getting it. I did get the remote delivered and it actually operates my old 2010 Samsung LED Smart TV. The remote only has about three buttons on it that is not included in the URC Remote code set. I'll just learn them into the URC Remote. If the codes on my new remote operate my current old television I'm pretty sure they're still using the same code sets for the new ones.

Just an update. Got the 48JS8500 yesterday and got it set up. And the standard remote I ordered from Samsung parts website that comes with the JS7000 model works it perfectly. Also the codes in the URC software #656 works the television just fine. It only lacked 4 labeled buttons that came on the remote I ordered but you can still access those 4 features without the need for the 4 buttons from the other remote. So if you plan to ordering a JS8500 model Samsung the code set #656 Will work just fine. :))
